.... and other webmail based sites. Any suggestions I've tried this article, and it was not worth the effort http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=318378 seems to be something blocking it, uninstalled sygate, and windows firewall is disabled. WinXP, SP2, all patches installed.

Is it just webmail sites?
Are you behind a corporate firewal/proxy...?

You could try accessing it via an IP address.
Go to dos and type
"ping www.hotmail.com"
This will show its IP.
Then just type that into IE address bar.

My search wasn't working either so came up with this from google
something was corrupt, and this worked a treat,
from DOS
regsvr32 wshom.ocx
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
