Just saw a few people walking round with those unsightly black thumb prints on their heads on my way to get my sambo... Just wondering if we have anyone on Boards who partakes in this annual ritual??

I don't.. Not since I was at school anyway

    Didn't realise that was today.

No, I draw the line at not eating meat, I'm not going to mass as well.

i think the last time i had ashes on my forehead was when that guy who used to be an archbishop and is a cardinal now put them there. he didn't try to feel me up though. about 18 years ago.

I have mine on my fore head right now. I'm in a religious college (Mater Dei Institute) so there is a chaplin there to get east access to ashes ;)

I actually have mass on my timetable monday-friday from 11:50 to 12:30 but it is optional so an extra 40 minutes for lunch

Not a chance. the priest doesn't even attempt to make a cross anymore. Its just a dirty thumb print on yer head.

Cause a big black cross is soooo much nicer looking on your forhead than a black blob :D

    The lazy bast*rds...

I will be going to mass this evening and getting the ashes. Although it's not ashes anymore - it's just like wet play-dough they use nowadays and it's a dirty brown colour. I know I'm in the minority nowadays.

    no

That, and the fact it's not a "cool" way to express ones faith.

Perhaps the church should give out gray coloured charity style braclets on ash Wednesday with "Jesus died for me" or something on them.

I can imagine the queues at churches then... and very happy priests to see so many younger people at church

    (not in that way)

    Whats it all about ?

Is it like an advert for religious one upmanship ?
'Look at me everyone, I've been to church, I'm religious, I'm going to heaven'

Or is it another of these religious things that very few people think about and go through the motions like robots ?

What is the religious significance of not eating meat today ? (Or is this right up there with eating fish on a Friday thing ?)

I had to laugh last year when Mrs Englander (good catholic girl) came back from church on palm Sunday with a bit of a tree.

I asked what it was and she said it was from church for palm sunday and its a palm. It was a bit of a bloody leylandii tree ! I mean come on, what the hell is that all about !!? (Still picking up bits of leylandii from the car where we had to keep it, as it would keep us safe ffs!).

I suppose as a person brought up in a fairly religiously neutral environment its all a little bit odd to me.

I don't think you want to be touching wood in that case

englander, it's to signify the whole "ashes to ashes dust to dust" thing and how unworthy they all are etc
and lent begins now I think

i think it would be a tad hypocritical for me to go to mass just for the churches special occasions so i didnt go get it done

Yep, in an hour's time. But looking around UCD today, it seems there's quite a few of us around who still do this (We've Mass four times today so everybody who wants to can get their ashes)!

Perhaps we should approach the church with our idea.... Catholicism could be the next cool religion you know!
Madonna might even get in on it...

Nice of them to all paint targets on their heads like that. Shame there's never a nutcase in a belltower when you want one.
