Firewire Drivers

I bought a PCI Firewire card a few months back off eBay, only got around to installing it last night. When I went to install the drivers, I found that the drivers CD contained something totally different, no drivers to be found. The card doesn't even have any manufacturers information on it so I was wondering are there any generic drivers I could try installing or are they all manufacturer specific?

The seller I bought them off isn't answering my mails.

What OS are you using ?

Have you any details on the card itself ?

It's Windows XP. I have very little details on the card, came in a brown cardboard box. It's a PCI card.

afair XP should automatically pick up the firewire card, it has done on any machine i have ever installed FW into, its a standard driver for all firewire ports and windows should have it, after you have installed it plug a FW ipod or something in to see if it works

I've tried plugging a Camcorder in and it wasn't picked up.

First thing ... make sure it's properly seated in a free PCI slot ... not a shared slot. You could try seating the card in a different slot .. not scientific, but it sometimes helps.

XP really should pick the device up ... you can run the Add Hardware wizard from Control Panel, and see what it tells you ... as wizards go, it's not bad.

Failing that, you can run Device Manager, from Control Panel, System, Hardware tab .. and this will list the devices that XP recognises on the machine. You may see your Firewire card listed with a yellow exclamation mark icon ... click on the icon for more details... it maybe there is a conflict with some other device.

Have you checked out the price of a cheap & cheerful card from your local store ... complete with drivers & instructions ? ... just a thought.

Thanks for the help, from reading MSDN most firewire cards should be picked up without the need for drivers. I'll try the card in a different slot when I get home and will check out the device manager.

Did you set the camcorder to "PLAY"? Otherwise it won't pick it up...

Not suggesting you are. It sometimes happens when one is frustrated that rudimentary details are overlooked.

    No offence intended.
