    A Pentium III 1ghz or a Celeron M 1.5Ghz?

I have a Dell Latitude C610 laptop with the P3 in it and it's starting to fall apart. I see Dell have a cheapy Inspiron 1300 Celeron M 1.5Ghz for sale at the minute.

Would the Celeron M 1.5Ghz be noticeably quicker?

Well if i recall my processor knowledge correctly, a Pentium M is based on the PIII design. Sort of a list of what the original designers put together during post PIII production as what could be improved. Literally it was the processor that the PIII was born to become and it certainly did that and more;) .

Celerons are bluntly put, Pentiums with half of the normal L2 cache. So likewise a Celeron M would have half the cache of its Pentium relative.

I would say go for the Celeron M. While having more cache never hurts the M design is powerful and very efficent, not to mention probably more power friendly than its PIII brethren.
