Does anyone know for certain if Wigan are in Europe now, as CC runners up? I was sure that because Utd, barring some sort of spectacular blow up, are in the CL next season for finishing in the top 4 so their EC spot next season for winning the CC goes to Wigan. Thing is though, the commentators were saying things along the lines that Wigan had the chance to get into Europe if the win the cc.

I was wondering this myself... I was thinking yes, considering Utd are morre of less guaranteed a place in CL now, Wigan should get their place..

    Or maybe this has changed..

    They are.
United are guaranteed a place in Europe next season unless we ruin it. So a team that wins the League Cup allways gets into Europe for the Uefa cup. So our Uefa cup spot will go to Wigan for being runners up.

    No I don't think that's right.

If the team that wins the carling cup is in a Champion's League spot, then the UEFA spot is given to the next team in line for it in the League table. Which I think would be 6th, but anyone is welcome to correct me on that.

No, the rule was changed 2 years ago.
Wigan will get the spot only on league position, and runner up gives nothing.
United are now guarenteed a UEFA cup squad.

I hope they get in via the league then. It would be a just reward for Dave Whelan, Jewell et al. Still, I'm glad they got a good spanking from us on Sunday.

That's pretty much what I just said, isn't it?

I'm not being smart or cheeky or anythin, I just wanna make sure that I understand u right:
Man U finish in 2nd/3rd/4th then the Carling Cup UEFA spot is given to whoever finishes 1 place below the UEFA Cup spot(s) in the league. Is that right?

With United winning the Carling Cup, it now means 6th place in the league will get into the UEFA Cup.

If the FA Cup final is between Chelsea and Liverpool, then 7th place will get a UEFA spot. So Arsenal might be in Europe next season after all.

Am I right in saying that originally there was only one place in the UEFA cup coming from the league? Im not sure I agree with that. Suppose it doesnt really matter now though.

right and right, but i think the CC and FA cup are so often won by a team already in europe that generally one extra goes to the league
