Im 19 from the U.S. and have been interested in moving to Ireland for some time, hopefully this fall. ive been chating with some dublin people, one says to look at Galway for pubs and a good music scene. Is it as expensive out there as in Dublin? and what does job opportunity look like? living accomodations?

Come to Galway it's Fcuking brilliant you have everything here, Galway Races,Arts Festival, not to mention the only FREE Airshow held in Salthill every Summer, good gigs, Sally Longs and Roisin Dubh for good live acts, The Cellar for the open Mic and Cuba for the Comedy Club, we have it all drink prices are ok could be better but way way cheaper than Dublin, Dublin is a rip off if a Pint costs you 3Euro before 11pm be prepared to have a heart attack as the Price goes straight up to 5Euro the minute the clock hits 11pm so in Short Galway City Class, Dublin City Crap!!:D

Did i do us proud Guys?

    They speak the truth.

Not quite. Nowhere in Ireland is as expensive as Dublin.

    Bleak.

    CONS:
    Rain... Cold.... Rain.... Cold....

Really Loud annoying fecker's (if you live in the city)

Ya'll manage to find a job of some description (so long as you're not TOO picky;) )

Be prepared to travel (a lot) to go anywhere else in Ireland... the West of Ireland is useless for any sort of county travel (the guts of 5hrs on a bus to get to Dublin or Kilkenny for example, about 3hrs 30mins on the train, but almost 3times the price...)

Be weary of what time of year you're looking for accomodation... rent rockets around the start of each term by anywhere from 50 to 150 euro per month!

    PROS:
    Nightlife is savage...

Always lots happening, if you know where to look.

Pleanty of shops (some 24hr) and it ain't that expensive.

Not really overcrowded, like a lot of other Irish citys ('cept during tourist season)

The street market at the weekend in town.

    Music... Gigs.... Comedy....

...Personally, I left Dublin to live here....:D

Galway people are different from Dubliners. I find, I'm from Galway but Ive been living in Dublin for the last two years, my work requires it.
I prefer Galway, people are more chilled out, and I find generally more proud to be Irish, I find people in Dublin are either D4 (wannabe west brits) or nackers (who generally have no self confidence and have no pride being Irish) . I guess that's just a Dublin thing though.
People from outside Dublin tend to be more 'Irish'. All depends who you're hanging out with though of course.
Problem with Galway is though, it's small, so dont expect the High Profile gigs you would get in Dublin. You will get a fair share of cool gigs going on, you just have to be more open to going to seeing different stuff.
It also does rain more in Galway, but if your prepared for that, it's no problem really. Just make sure you get a good house/ apartment, you should be able to get work, just budget that it could take you say a month or maybe even two to land a job that will pay properly.
I had to move to Dublin for example to get a good computer Job, although that was after the dot com crash, I think it's different now.
Anyway, turn up to the next Galway Beers :)
