I'm an existing NTL subscriber and I want eurosport. What is the best way to get this? Do I need to dump NTL and go the dish route or can I access it through NTL digital. Your help appreciated.

I believe its on NTL Digital but I'm not 100% sure.

Its available on Sky's "News & Events" mix, along with Eurosport UK 2.

You can also get the classic European version in analogue off Astra 1 at 19.2E (also comes in German), but this has quite noticably different schedules to the UK version.

There's a digital version of Eurosport (in German only) FTA on 19.2, TP 12226/27500.

What particular sport are you after?

    There are other channels (FTA).

There's no chance of EuroSport on NTL digital.

Hrm, thats odd, I thought it was pulled off analogue only. Ah well.

Anyway, its Sky; Analogue FTA, or Learn German and digital FTA - which will also get you D:SF.

    Motorsport, World Superbikes in particular.

RaceWorld (12610 V SR22000) and DSF both have cars & Bikes on 19E FTA

There also seems to be a new italian sport channel FTA on Hotbirds 13E, but seems to be mostly kicking balls around.

Eurosport unfortunately isn't available on NTL.

However I wonder what will happen when UPC (the new owners of both NTL and Chorus) merge the channel lineup of Chorus and NTL as they said they will.

Will they drop Eurosport from Chorus digital or add it to NTL digital.

    Anyone care to guess?

I'm guessing (hoping) that they add it.

There are a couple of other channels like this that are on Chorus but not on NTL like the UKTV channels, I wonder what will happen to them.

    Hmm.
Im guessing they will drop it and replace it with NBC because that is the most riveting channel ever...

I have been in contact with NTL repeatedly over this issue. I have also been in contact with eurosport and they quite firmly replied that their station is FTA. If I want my local operator to show it, I should ask them and they will get permission from eurosport to relay it. Quite simple as far as I am concerned.

For cryin out loud, I am even willing to subscribe to NTL Digital @ €29.99pm just to get that channel. They just plain refuse to allow me to part with my money...

Actually I believe that the story was that Eurosport wanted more money to show on NTL analogue, NTL wanted to move it to digital as it would make digital more attractive. Eurosport refused to move to digital and NTL didn't want to pay more, so NTL dropped it.

Of course things have changed now, NTL is owned by UPC now and UPC seem to carry Eurosport on digital in most coutries, so I'd say that there is a good chance it will return to NTL digital :)

It probably won't return to analogue and it will probably be removed from Chorus analogue to be replaced by Setanta, as Setanta is probably more popular and targeted at Irish viewers.

So why is all English Eurosport encrypted on Satellite if it is FTA?
Chorus Analog on MMDS is likely to be scrapped very soon to allow full NTL Digital cable lineup and Chorus/NTL analog cable reduced to a few FTA channels (RTE, BBC, ITV) to make more space for DOCSIS broadband and Digital TV channels.

    Yes, definitely.

Not quite, I believe they will continue to maintain the 17 channel analogue lineup (or 18 when they add C6, if they decide to add it rather then replacing). They will certainly dump all the premium analogue channels in the Chorus area, like they have already done in NTL areas, but not the basic channels. They don't really need to reduce the basic analogue channels as they already have plenty of space for the extra digital channels and BB.

The Cork area and other scrambled areas are a possibility, as there is very little difference in price between the scrambled analogue and Digital. However I'm guessing that wwhat they might do is get everyone to upgrade to Digital, while actually replacing the scrambled analogue service with an unscrambled analogue service, but requiring everyone to sign up for digital, with the unscrambled analogue as a bonus for multi room and VCR's.

sounds about right I think the Chorus NTL joining will take a bit of time as the technology set top boxes billing etc seem to differ channel line ups will probably be a problem in the short term but my guess is Setanta will become a pay channel in the future and Eurosport will go on the basic digital in Dublin.
