I am partial to the odd bet, mostly with the bookies - small wagers, never anything big. The very odd time I have a bet with mates usually as a result of a discussion where there is a difference of opinion on football, you know stuff like who'll finish higher in the league 'pool or Utd etc.

Well, I made a bet for 20euro with a friend of mine last summer that Poland would qualify for the World Cup, which they did by October. He wouldn't pay up at the time and still hasn't to this day.

I only thought of it again just there. I am still pissed off about this every time I think about it. It's not about the money and I haven't been hounding him for it. In fact, there hasn't been much said about it since before Christmas. I've always paid up my bets and this is the only time someone hasn't paid up for me. We shook on it and he hasn't given any reason why he didn't pay up. Any time I did ask for it he gave me a sort of look as if he thought less of me for asking for the money, whereas on the other hand he has gone down in my estimation since I discovered this facet of his character.

Has anyone ever have a similiar experience? Were you able to forget about it or is it right to hold a slight resentment towards that friend?

Edit: Crap, probably should have put this under 'personal issues'..........

If it was a serious bet, he's just being a prick, lose all communication with him. You need a better calibre of friend.

Jaysus, that's a bit harsh, dump your friend over €20?????? Do you have many friends?

Pigheads been down this horrible road before. http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=239246

Friends who refuse to pay up bets deserve nothing more than public shunning and humiliation. Pighead got T-Shirts made up with a picture of Kernel with "tightarse scumbag who doesn't pay up on lost bets" written underneath. Obviously this resulted in Kernel losing the respect of his colleagues and has seen him being taunted in public by complete strangers. Drop that Zero Nunu.

If you're a strong lad you could dangle him by his legs from a balcony until he pays up, or even shake the money out of him and pick it up downstairs. I bet 20 quid that will teach the tightarse liar to honour his bets like a man.

put it to you this way - it's cost you €20 to find out your mates word is worth s***e all. you probably got off lightly. doesn't mean you can't still be mates with him tho.

i think ye should dump your mate, i mean if you cant trust him to pay up on his bets he will probably have no problem trying to ride your wife or girlfriend in the future.

Hey hey! Read the full thread and you will see my valid defense. Either way, I still pay your mother child support, so there's no need for the tightarse comment - although the t-shirt has made me much more popular around Georges Street...

make a bet that you are certain to lose.
€20 says that Ireland will win the world cup this year. your friend takes the bet, you don't pay him the €20. all is well in the world.

Tbh I have similar experiences all the time.

To my recollection, not one of my friends has ever paid up on a bet/debt.

Real pain in the ass really, as on at least one ocassion I gave em real good odds to (I have to, cos they know I'm good at predicting certain things).

e.g. In one case, we made a bet whereby if I lost, I'd pay my mate 90euro and if I won he only had to pay me 20.

Why do I keep making such silly bets, if they never pay up, you ask?

Well... I make these bets with other ppl too - my bruv, his mates, my in-laws, etc etc... And they, without exception, always pay up.

I'm waiting for the one glorious day when one of my so-called f**king mates will actually pay-up on a lost bet... Then all will be right in the universe.

    Fat chance...

make a ridiculous bet where you know they will win loads of money and when they win tell them **** off. see how the boot fits on the other foot etc. etc.

May I suggest you get in contact with the Revenue Commissioners, Stamping Office, Dublin Castle, Dublin 1 and object to his Bookmaker's Licence.

One thing I've learnt is not to do much activity with friends..
But if I do I must really trust that person or we made everything crystal clear..

Tell your friend if he can't afford, don't bet..

A friend who welches on a bet is not a friend. Kick his arse, rob his wallet and then tell him to cnut off.
