at the minute my PC is a bit of a mine field with all the viruses I got :( before I had no problems because I had McAfee and that kicked all their asses, but now the subscription has run out, and I don't know what to do. I got AVG Free but that only got rid of some of them, there is a big momma that doesn't want to go, does anyone know of a good anti-virus software that is free?

Avast is supposed to be pretty good. Have you tried running your a/v in Safe Mode?

    Linky!

Microsoft have software which is really excellent in my experience. Assuming you are using windows it should sort you out.

I've used both, I found AVG unstable and crap and Avast used to annoy me, having to restart after updates oh and that "virus database has been updated" >_<

In saying that, I've never had a serious virus problem, provention is better than cure ;)

Eg., keep windows up to date with the latest patches, make sure your firewall is turned on, don't open attachments from people you don't know, don't use Outlook express or Internet explorer... simple things

It only seems to work with Windows XP, not any older Windows.

I used Avast for a long time until I went and bought some AV software (Trend PC-Cillin 2002.... well.. not so much paid for as "discovered I had received a complimentary copy of with my mainboard") which revealed a whole list of viruses avast had missed...

Sorry, I don't think there was any new free AV released since we had this last week (and the week before that, and...) so you'll just have to make do with our stock answers.
