for some unknown reson, in the last week everytime xp goes through the initial start-up the system 32 folder opens up. it's just a minor thing, but it pisses me off a surprising amount (i do have a life btw:D). i was wondering if there is anyway i can stop this from happening?

    Which OS version? (including SP)
Obligatory suggestion: Update, and scan for spyware & viruses

    xp home sp2

no viruses/spyware that i know of...

i'm paranoid when it comes to this sort of thing, so i have all the major free security programmes.

And are they up to date? And have you run a full scan very recently?

Boot into Safe Mode - does it happen in there?
If not - check regedit [ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run /RunOnce ,etc] or simply disconnect from the 'Net and disable startup items, reboot and test [Start -> Run -> msconfig -6 -> OK -> disable all -> reboot. If this works - via msconfig, re-enable items selectively (put a tick next to the box)]
