    1982 Zicos free kick.

1983 Seeing Mc Grath play for Utd and think we got money for him

1986 Being old enough to realise that what Maradona just did was pure footballing genius, in our kickabouts for ever afterwards passing was frowned upon when faced with 31 players.1987 Whelans goal vs Brazil/ Actually it was USSR

    1988 Vs England

1990 Pats winning the league in 1990, having been saved from extinction the season previous, winning the league out in the cross being told we were going "home".
I thought wew were gash in that WC only scoring 1 goal and getting to the QTRs but it was great we were there.

1991/2 Going back to Richmond and hearing the classic line " they have a stand its like Wembley it has steps"....still tho had our ground back.

    1992 Getting Sky Sports :D

    1994
Beating Italy, but Aldos header Vs mehico deadly.

1995 Ireland vs Holland, stuck in an irish pub in Frankfurt watching it with about 500 Dutch fans, we never had a hope but it was good fun.

1996 winning league on last day with a stunning free kick.
Pats v Bohs 3-3 one of the best games i was ever at both sets of fans made it special.

1998 Shame it went to the last day we should have had the league wrapped up weeks ago. RTE showed both games live on tv at the same time we had a tv in Kilkenny :D

Drawing away to Celtic and the noise we created there, best part was even tho talking was hard my throat was so sore, with 10 to go we knew that they were awful and had no hope of scoring so from then on it was definitley the best moment ever as a fan. Martin Reilly missed the "one chance you get in CL" football, still a legend tho.

    1999
Our 2nd back to back league wins.

2001 Martin Chukwu delivering football justice.

    2002 Keane vs Germany

2003 Pats v Bohs 4-3 they were better footballers, played better, created more chances we just wanted it more.

2005 Beating champions elect Cork 1-0 away with 9 men to ensure we stayed up.

So in summing up, every fan has their day no matter who you support, whether its Man Utd winning the CL, AC winning everything, Pats winning their 1st ever game in europe. Its all swings and roundabouts, if you abuse someone for 11 years eventually it will come back to you :D

I think my best moment was in the treble season, but it wasn't the CL final win, it was the win over liverpool, that was just unreal.

    England, 1988

    Italia '90

    Beating Italy in 94

Losing to Mexico in 94 ( yeah might sound strange, but watching it on the campsite, outside the pub[ the inside was totally wedged ] while the region was experiencing its worst thunder and lightening storm for years...100 irish fans getting totally soaked for 90 mins, wacthing our team playing in the world cup.....twas magical )

Blackburn winning the league in 1995

    Sligo Rovers:
1994 FAI Cup Final. Rovers 1-0 Derry City

Winning the First Division, FAI Cup and First Division Shield in 93/94.

Winning the League Cup in 1998, especially seeing as we beat Shels in the final after what happened in 1996.

    Getting promoted last season.

    AC Milan:
The first half of last season's Champions League Final. Milan were irrepressible in those 45 minutes. They played beautiful football.

Beating Barca 4-0 in the 1994 CL Final.

    The Capello years.

Beating Juve and Inter on the way to collecting the 2003 European title.

Handsomely winning the 2004 Serie A title.

Knocking Manchester United out of last season's competition.

That 6-0 win over Inter a few seasons back.

The 3-2 win over Inter a couple of years ago. When Milan were 2-0 down at half time, only to come back in the second half.

    Ireland:
    Alan McLoughlin's equaliser in Belfast.

Ray Houghton's goal against the Italians.

Vitor Baia's own goal in Dublin in 1995.

Beating Croatia and Yugoslavia in Euro 2000 qualifying.

McAteer's winner against the Dutch in 2001.

    The final whistle in Tehran.

Those late late equalisers against Germany and Spain in 2002.

    Other:
The epic game between Yugoslavia and Spain in Euro 2000.

Juve eliminating Real Madrid in Turin in 2003 and 2005. Great games.

The last two minutes of the 1999 CL Final.

    The 1998 World Cup Final.

Shelbourne's great European run in 2004.

Saint Pat's 0-0 draw with Celtic in Glasgow.

    Blackburn:

    The SAS in 1995: Unstoppable.

League Cup triumph: Spurs were all over Blackburn that day but I think Rovers wanted it more. Beating Arsenal 4-0 en route to the final was nice too.

Blackburn 5 Burnley 1: The Dingles got a lesson that day!

    Ireland:

Packie's save at Italia '90: We're all part of Jackie's Army!

Beating Italy: Ray Houghton does it again.

Keano against Germany: Was in a jampacked pub and absolutely everyone lost the head. Couldn't believe it, was sure we were out. They playyed "Put 'em Under Pressure" then and it just completed the atmosphere.

Packie Bonners save against Timofte + O'Learys peno in 1990.

Steve Bruces goal in the 98th/99th(!) minute against Sheffield Wednesday at OT in 93.

Cantona's goal against Pool in Cup Final.

The obvious ones from the Treble, Nou Camp, Keane in Turin, Giggs v Arsenal and Pool at OT.

Games against Holland and Portugal under Big Mick.

    There are some weird ones that also stick out, not quiet on the same scale as above but they are the smaller moments that make following a football team so enjoyable;

Beating Arsenal 4-2 at Highbury, the Keane incident at the start really helps it stick out.

Forlans goal against Chelsea at OT in the 93rd minute!

Kanchelskis's hatrick against Man City at OT back in 94/95?

Cantonas goal against NEwcastle at St James Park...... The list goes on really.

Its a tough one, to just define the single best moment. It depends on where you are to enjoy, who's with you, what happens next in terms of celebration etc.

Clearly for me it has to be the main Irish matches:

The 1-0 win against England in 1988. However, I was in England and not with other Irish people. I was in Liverpool in fact. I did celebrate, I had a great night, but .... I was one of none.

The 1-1 draw against England in 1990 was more of a celebration. I was in Dublin and it was a brilliant match (ie: tense, we were down, we came back, it felt like a win!) and we had a great long night celebrating in Dublin.

The 1-0 win against Italy is also up there, Iwas at the match, we had a good time in New York. However, NY is not football mad or soccer crazy.

So overall, I would have to choose the 1-1 draw in 1990 against England.

However, I also have a small niggling feeling for the CL win by Liverpool in 2005 .....

    choices, choices ....

    redspider

ps: on the pitch it was a game in which we won 12-0 and I scored 9. One of those days where well over half of my shots, headers, etc went in. It was like throwing 6 sixes in a row, my luck just came up.

Bray wanderers winning the first division, and the time they won the cup also. Ireland beating holland. Oh and liverpool coming back from 3 - 0 down to win the champions league, beating Man U last weekend was fairly up there also.

I'd imagine because you listed all their achievements. We'd be here a while if the Man Utd and Liverpool supporters started doing the same. The title asks you to list your favourite moments. You weren't even alive I'd imagine to experience most of the things you listed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,953 ✭✭✭blu_sonic

but it didn't state you had to be there for the "Best moment as a fan", your correct i wasn't born being 22 years old but i could (but i won't) start pulling people up saying well most of you weren't in that country when that moment happened, ie. the EPL, SERA, WC events but i don't begrudge them their best moments, i just stated these to be the reasons that its great being a fan, in other words all the good far far far outweighs the bad, i wouldn't have any issues with L'pool or man U fans posting their honours list

    Liverpool

    2005 Championleague final:
    - Scoring the 2nd goal, knowing we in with a serious chance to come back. dudeks save against schvencenko(sp) in the last few minutes of extra-time. Andy gray was spot on when he said that you might aswell put liverpools name on the trophy now.

The treble and finished second a year later
    - Great to finally win some silverware. When we finished second i seriously thought we had a great chance to win it next year.

    4-3 vs Newcaslte
-stan collymore with the winner. Kevin Keegan's face said it all.

    Republic of Ireland

    Mcgouhlins equaliser in belfeast.

1990 - Quinn equaliser against the Dutch. Packies peno save.

    94 - Beating the Italians.

2002 - Keane's equaliser against the Germans. The peno against spain followed shortly by pain, so i cant count it.

With ManU, it has to be that Ryan giggs goal against Arsenal at Villa Park in 1999. The ecstacy of that moment for me was unreal. Actually pretty much that whole 1998/1999 season was the most unbelievable rollercoaster you can ever experience as football fan.

With Shelbourne, Dave Rogers goal against Hadjuk Split in 2004. Not only was the goal a stunner, not only that it can from nowhere, not only was it such a vital moment...... it was by Rogers FFS! The last player on the team (apart from Dave Crawley of course) you would expect to see a strike like that from. Magical moment.

Being in the crowd behind the goal for the peno's against Romania (1990).

    Houghton's goal against the Italian's and McGrath's subsequent God-like performance (1994).

Liverpool 4 Newcastle 3 (the first time 1996?)

McAllister's goal against Alaves, was it a golden one????? (2001)

Owen's double against Arsenal in the cup final and the party that went on in my house that night. (2001)

Qualifying for the WC against Iran (2001)

Holding our own in the WC and being in New York at the time watching the matches in the morning having been out all night the nights before :D

Being in Anfield to see Liverpool knock out Olympiakos in the CL, little did we know the significance of it. (2005)

Being in The Kop to see Chelsea elimated from Europe (2005)

Chelsea winning the FA Cup v Middlesbrough - Di Matteos super goal after 43 seconds or so - First real trophy that CFC had won in over 20 years of following them (though zenith data's system full members was a great cup as well...honest!).

    Ireland v England 1988 - enough said.

League game not invovling Chelsea :
1989 - last game of the league - arsenal take the league from liverpool at anfield (still have a soft spot for the arsenal even now 'cos of that!)

International game not involving Ireland :

In fairness between him Babb and Ruddock they had the makings of almost 1/2 a Jamie Carragher there.

As a Leeds fan one of the highs has to be that amazing Champions League run we went on when no one gave us a hope. We beat some top temas along the way including Lazio and AC Milan. The highlight has to be the 3-0 win at home to Deprtivo in the quarter final. What a night that was. As of late there has been very little to cheer about with Leeds but hopefully I can add promotion back to where we belong as agreat moment come the end of the season.

As for Ireland the goal McAteer scored against Holland stands out for me. Amazing match. Also Robbie Keanes goal against Germany in 2002 but sadly I didnt get to see it because I was in the middle of one of my Leaving Cert Exams but my god I heard it because there was a huge cheer. We also had this young lad sitting in the pub around the corner and told him to run into the school yard screaming if Ireland scored. It took the examiner a good 5 minutes the shut everyone up when he did just that.

When Robbie Keane scored in injury time against Germany in 2002, and then when he scored the penalty against Spain in 2002 aswel. 2 absolutely brilliant moments. I remember my heart nearly stopped as he was getting ready to take the penalty because Harte had missed one 30 minutes earlier.

Jaysus, I've had to trawl the archives to come up with some Spurs ones...

1984 UEFA Cup final second leg, ended 2-2 and went to penos. We won. My earliest football memory.

Gazza's free kick against the Goons in the FA Cup semi 1991. Sweet as, and against the auld enemy. Double bonus.

Michael Carrick's introduction on 59 minutes against Charlton at WHL in November 2004. 3-0 down, the game ended 3-2 and I realised just how important he was going to be to our development. I will never forget the 31 minutes he played that day.

Oh, Nayim from the halfway line...:D

    Shels?

Like everyone else, Scouse's goal against Split.

The welcome Glentoran got at Tolka Park for the CL qualifier, and the abuse the a*sehole from the DGB got at the end when he started acting the bo**ox.

Also, many many goals from Tony Sheridan in the 90s, helped me realise the EL had a lot more to offer than people gave it credit for.

As a Chelsea fan I guess it was winning the UEFA Super Cup against Real Madrid back in August 97, combined with our FA cup win a few monthspreviously ( that lovely goal from Di Matteo after a few seconds, and it was my first trip to Wembley) they were the first signs that we were cpable of winning anything and laid the foundtions for the club's success today. Despite having a raft of internationals, Poyet, Zola, Le Boeuf, De Goey, Ferrer, Di Matteo, Poyet , Babayaro, we didn't look like winning the league back then, any trophy was a cause for celebration and beating Real even then was some achievement. :)

and Houghton's goal against England of course.
