Soulseek and Bit Torrent Connectivity Issues

Hi guys, i have some problems that i would like to share with you in the hope that they can be resolved.

I can't browse peoples files in Soulseek, and likewise people who attemp to browse my files they get a "error reading files" message.

Also whenever i use Soulseek or uTorrent my internet connection runs very slowly and i keep getting disconnected from GAIM (i have msn, yim and aim on gaim).

I have a Netgear DG834G router and 2 computers on the network, both which are fitted with Soulseek and uTorrent. I have no port forwarding setup, is it just a simple case of configuring ports or is this a constant problem i'm going to be faced with...and if it is a port forward issue could someone please advise.

    Thanks

If you do not have port forwarding setup I suggest you go into the programs and find what port they are using then follow either of these guides.

If your router supports UPnP then you can forgo port forwarding by simply turning it on in the router though the app has to support UPnP as well (uTorrent does but it must be manually enabled).

Of course it could be the case that the router cannot take the strain that programs like Bittorrent place on it which is why your connection goes flaky it is a common issue as not all routers are equal some are better than others at handling large number of connections, what you could do is lower the number of connections per torrent in uTorrent and see if it makes a difference.
