Can you play the latest games on a laptop or is that only with a desktop?

That depends on the spec of the laptop... there are what are known as desktop replacement laptops which are almost as good as top of the line desktops, though they're hefty and are basically portable desktops rather than portable portable.

Lower down the scale for example you can stick graphics into the likes of the Dell Inspiron 6000. You can play games on decent notebooks, but upgrading them is a no no.

I was all set to buy a desktop, but someone at work said that it would be stupid as desktops are too bulky and laptops can do almost everything desktops can.

Its the same old story. You need to decide what you want more.

The power, expanability and general permanance of a desktop.

The fractionally less powerful, far less expandable, portability of a laptop. Plus some people think there is a more 'cool' factor with a lappy.

If you want portability how much? More portability = more compromise on spec.

You can get get 19" laptops with SLI gfx onboard. At the cost of wait and tiny battery life. Personally I think only a muppet would get one, but hey, whatever floats other peoples boats.

Dell Inspiron XPS is a decent gaming lappy, but as secret squirrel said, if you want ultraportability it's not the best idea.

I'd say just go for a decent desktop - a lot of people buy laptops before realising that they just leave it on their desk all the time.
