Definitely agree with you on the spotters - not that they can't let go ever but they definitely shouldn't have shrugged off. The dudes clearly going for a near 1RM, they should've been all over that.

Don't think it was Gene, he wasn't wearing the skull cap... Besides, Gene's 1015 attemp was at the ASC.

The spotters weren't at fault and it wasn't an outrageous attempt, he controlled the negative perfectly and you have to pause on the chest, he obviously just lost concentration or got an injury, you can't predict that... In a bench shirt also you rely on the spring from the bottom to gain impetus, so after putting it on his chest, he probably sought to spring it if you get what I'm saying but lost control.

I'm not so sure Easygainer, I think the spotters are partly to blame on that. They seemed to me to be slow to react.

Yeah , but spotting someone in competition can be seriously rough. You don't want to act to early in case they can save it and get there lift, if you act to late they can be hurt.

That's a fair point Dragan, I'm sure he would have been annoyed if they'd stepped in too early. It just seemed like it was avoidable to me. Saying that though I don't bench so my viewing of the lift is going to be different than someone who knows the lift.

One of the main problems when going for a heavy bench is the pause vs the drop.

By that i mean, man times when i have been doing some 1RM testing i come to a point on the lift where i cannot lift the weight i am trying, but i can get to a half way point and not get any further. Alternatively, at this point i can successfully hold the weight and continue to try and push through the stoppage for a few seconds before i will no longer have the strenght and will need the spotter to take the weight before it begins a descent. As such, it can be difficult for the dude who spots me to time when i will need his help.

That said, he is a great spotter and has never done me wrong yet!
