    Hi all

    Some background info:

At the end of my 5th week of dieting now, its been going well, im down from 196 to 190, nice and steady loss, trainings been okay, cardio's been fun  sticking to the diet well, this week however, things took a turn.

Yesterday: Just finished my lab, walking back with my mates, feel a bit queasy, ended up not leaving the cubicle for over an hour:o

Back at home, my blessed mother the nurse starts stuffing all sorts of carbs down my throat but i can't hold anything down, dehydrated, hungry ahhh catabolism:mad:

I doubt it was anything i ate (all prepared at home), possibly a bug i caught on the dart but if so was very fast acting

So after the gory details my question is, has anyone here suffered similiar ehh problems midway through your dieting?? Maybe its just being run down, though ive been eating fruit and taking my usual multivits, have't changed my diet except for reduction in calories and carbs

Also for the last 2 weeks or so ive had a very dry throat, now granted the simple solution is i'm just sick but ive felt fine:confused:

Apologies if this sounds like i'm asking for a medical opinion, i'm just interested to hear anyone else's experiences (if any)

    thanks

Half my work mates are out sick today and yesterday due to unexplained bouts of vomiting,i heard somebody else who i dont work with talking on the bus about being up all night puking.I dont think its anything to do with your diet its just something thats "going round"!!

I may be wrong but it doesn't sound to me like your cutting enough to have the illness relate to the dieting dude. 76 pounds over 4 to 5 weeks is a nice steady pace as you have said, and when you are dieting you have no need to be dehydrating yourself so that should not be an issue either.

I would put it down to a bug for now, as Degsy said, lots of people catching things right now.

lol i wasn't dehydratingmy self for a comp or anything *laughs at the thought of it* i just couldn't hold anything down - not even water:(

i guess it must have been on the way to college, got up at 8 felt grand, by 12 i was miserable!!

Nope, loads of things doing the rounds. Sick at the moment myself.

Question for the experts: when you're cutting should you break the diet if you're sick? Conventional wisdom (and my body) would tell me yes, that I should be eating more carbs than normal when I'm sick (I've been trying to get in a decent amount of protein as well though). Should I be doing this to help shake the flu or should I just stick to the diet?

it pretty much depends on the extent of your illness. If you have a head cold or a mild irritation of some sort then you can stick to the diet. Eating carbs certainly won't help you fight flu or other viral infections directly, but it will give your body an extra energy boost to allow it to fend off infection better.

If the illness was gastrointestinal however and you were subjected to repeat bouts of vomitting and/ or diarrhoea, your body will lose large quantities of fluids and nutrients. In this case I'd say that yes, you should up your carbs, increase hydration and strengthen your body. You may also want to take extra Vitamin C which to aid the immune system. If you're run down, or your body is slightly starved of fuel, you'll be compromised as to how well you fight off teh infection, and it may leave you open to subsequent or concurrent infections with other organisms. While it may slow down your cutting, it will shorten recovery time from the illness.

Also if you've been vomiting and/or suffering from "urgency" you have depleted your body of vital eletrolytes. These are esential salts needed bythe body. You can buy replacement salts under the brand name "Diorolyte" in the chemist,it speeds up your recovery time no end.
