...looks career threatening. Any loss of vision would surely end his career.
    Praying for ya, big lad.

UPDATE 2-Liverpool's Sissoko suffers vision loss
    Wed Feb 22, 2006 8:42 PM GMT11

    By Ian Simpson

LISBON, Feb 22 (Reuters) - Liverpool's Momo Sissoko has suffered vision loss in his right eye from being kicked in the head during the 1-0 Champions League defeat by Benfica, a hospital official said on Wednesday.

Sissoko, a 21-year-old Malian midfielder, was released from Lisbon's CUF Hospital on Wednesday afternoon to return to England, clinical director Dr Joao Paco told Reuters.

"The prognosis is guarded but vision is going to be compromised on the right side. If it's going to be 20 or 80 percent we can't say right now, it's premature. You have to wait for the next 48 or 72 hours," Paco said.

"He suffered a trauma with bruising of the eye. There was no apparent destruction of the structure."

Sissoko took a kick in the face from a high challenge by midfielder Beto who was booked.

Liverpool, the defending European club champions, said on their Web site that Sissoko's retina had been damaged in Tuesday's opening leg of the first knockout round and his sight was affected.

Paco said Beto had been following Sissoko's case and was shaken by the injury.

    Egdar Davids suffers glacoma

    Here's a quote from YNWA
I damaged my retina playing football about a year ago. In my case the ball rebounded in to my eye from close range. Let me tell you it was scary. I lost vision completely in the lower half of my right eye immediately and for weeks afterwards I was seeing flashing lights in that region and was forever being summoned back to the hospital to check on how my retina was repairing itself. Turns out I'd slightly torn my retina and the blindness was caused by specks of blood. But I made a complete recovery and am back playing again.

Alls I'm saying is any statements so far have only talked about retinal damage and not detachment. Lets hope the injury is in a similar vein to mine and he will make a full recovery and be playing as soon as possible.

Glacoma is preventable, Sissoko should hopefully be ok.

It causes the same effect or damage/degradation to the retina.
But one is treatable the other is just unlucky.

Football is put into perspective sometimes, after incidents like Smith's injury saturday and now this. I certainly hope he recovers.

    stupid question but who's YNWA?
bad injuries seem to happen all together, smith, sissako.

does anyone rember the spate of "tongue swallowing" back about 15 years ago, it became a big deal in football for awhile

I think I remember a Roy Keane/ Steve Staunton toungue swallowing incident where one of them had to pull the others tongue out of his throat after he swallowed it. Could be mistaken though.

    from liverpoolfc.tv
Liverpool Football Club have today reported an improvement in Momo Sissoko's condition as he recovers in hospital from a serious eye injury.
The Reds' midfielder is being cared for by top eye specialists following the injury he sustained in Portugal on Tuesday night.

A statement released by the club on Thursday afternoon reads as follows:

"We are glad to report there has been an improvement in Momo's condition over the past 24 hours, with the progress described as 'encouraging'.

"The player was examined this morning by a leading eye specialist who remains optimistic, despite reports emanating from Lisbon.

"Momo has been instructed to rest completely and will be examined again by the specialist next week."
That's encouraging at least. The eye's a very complicated structure so we'll have to wait and see but fingers crossed for the guy.

Don't forget poor Marc Vivien Foe at the Confederation's Cup.

I was at the Ireland-v-Wales game at Tolka Park in the early 90's when David O'Leary swallowed his tongue after an aerial collision.

Remember Mark Hughes swallowing his tongue after a clash of heads - did the tour of Old Trafford last year, part of it where you can see the contents of the physios bag, they all carry a spoon for that reason.

Wasn't Foe a heart attack not a tongue job?

Fingers crossed he will be grand for next season. GOnna be a big loss for the rest of this season though. Hes been excellent recently. We have done well with injury's this season, hope we can keep it that way.

The plan is to move Gerrard back to the centre with Alonso/Hamann and put Luis Garcia wide right. As Pongolle is on loan thats the only real option unless Finnan is used wide and Kronkamp at RB which would be considered to risky I'd say - Rafa seems to have decided the back 4 is as it should be.

I dont see the need for so much messing around, why not just drop Did straight in for Sissoko, as he should have been in the first place.

I agree myself but the thinking is simply that he is'nt as mobile and unlikely to last as long. Momo covers more ground than any other midfielder in the prem according to a recent survey.

Hamann can destory like MoMo, but he can't put himself around enough. Gerrard and Alonson need to be the midfield pairing, which means its going to be Garcia/Cisse/Finnan on the right.

Hamman will get the ball and pass it sideways and thats it, Sissoko will get it pass it sideways then run on for a return and try create something. Would say in about 2 or 3 years he be as good as any CMF in europe.

And often misplaces the pass :)
But that'll definitely get better playing alongside Didi/Gerrard/Alonso.

    Anyways, get well soon Momo!

I was pretty hard on this guy at the start of the season but he has improved so much since then. He has been motm in the last couple of games and in a few years I can see him being a fantastic player.

Sissoko could so easily have been in Hibs player Dean Shiels boots. It will be amazing if Shiels plays again at a professional level! Good luck to him.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/h/hibernian/4808214.stm
    Shiels almost ready for comeback

Hibs manager Tony Mowbray could soon welcome Dean Shiels back to his squad, with the player having begun training after an operation to remove an eye.
The 21-year-old NI midfielder had the eye removed just six weeks ago.

"Dean is now pain-free and has no irritation. He is back kicking the ball, he's fine and he's raring to go," said Mowbray.

"However, I don't want to make any false judgements, let's just see how he gets on in training."

Mowbray hopes to see Shiels back in action in another week or so.

"The operation will have taken a lot out of Dean both emotionally and physically and we're not setting him any targets. We're not interested in rushing him back," he added.

"But if everything continues to go well then he's got a good chance of playing his way back into our thoughts.

"We'll give him another week's training and he may even get a chance to play in a reserve game."

Edit: I was under the impression the eye was functional. He actually lost sight in the eye at 8 yrs old after an accident. If he made it as a player despite this limitation he should have no problems with his comeback.
