Okay been on the "GI diet" for about 3 weeks now,..... lost about 8 lbs, and was chuffed, but have put two back on :( ... ive found it to be very demoralising as im not too sure what ive done... granted might be one or two factors such as time of month etc soon but other than that im not sure.

This seems to happen everytime i start a diet, and i find it v demoralising and end up giving up. but i really really really dont want to do that this time, i want to stick at it and make things work :D

    Any advice from anyone ???

    Heyeeeessss- stick at it!!!!

well done on losing over half a stone- that's a huge achievement so pat yourself on the back :D

I know exactly how you feel- it makes no sense when you've been so well-behaved and yet your body just refuses to co-operate. But seriously, truly, honestly, hang in there if you can.

The recommended weekly sustainable weight loss is about 1-2lbs a week, so your 8lb loss is actually quite high. So chances are some of that loss was actually water weight which your body has put back on after the inital calorie-loss-shock. Instead of looking at your weight loss on a week to week basis, maybe try to spread it out to every two weeks, or even every month. I've given up getting on the scales every single week for exactly that reason. My weight fluctuates quite wildly depending on the time of month, any big meals I'd had recently and so on, so now it's once a month on teh scales and thats it.

And regardless of the weight loss, think about it this way- if you're following the GI diet right, then virtually all the foods you're eating are filling, nutiritious and healthy and very soon you'll start to see a huge improvement in your skin, nails, and hair (my nails used to flake off like fish scales, but they're hard as rocks now and never break).

So take a promise from me- it really IS worth it to stick to. Just think, summer is really only around the corner, by which time you'll have saved money from cutting out the junk and so you can treat yourself to a gorgeous new outfit to show off the new bod!! (sounds corny, but trust me, its a hell of a treat ;) )

Thanks Gem, your like a little rock. :D

Ah i know its totally worth it, its just demoralising at times, but i will stick at it, and maybe i need to reasess everything that im eating at the moment since my weight fluctuated, maybe its down to that aswell. Ill let you know how i get on, and thanks again.

ooh...umm.. (I'm just afraid to contradict anyone after another fiasco thread today.. but then on second hand you've already called me a man once today so I guess you can handle the rebuke :p ) GI 'dieting' isn't really dieting. It's healthy eating. In fact it discourages calorie watching and teaches you about watching portion sizes, and balancing your meals- they should be made up of about 50% vegetables/ salads 25% carbs and 25% protein (too low on the protein side for lifters alright, but fine for the egneral masses). Processed foods are not allowed and emphasis is put on replacing white breads/ pastas/ rice with filling, wholemeal alternatives. I'm a firm believer in GI principles- while not perfect, it's a long way from faddy eating.

no worries at all. here's a little trick I tried. For two or three days carry a little notebook and write down everything, and I mean everything that you eat and drink. Very often we selectively 'forget' about little snacks we eat and we cheat ourselves without realising. By writing it down it forces you to be totally honest and that way you can see where you might be compromising your progress.

It's amazing how I can 'forget' about the tubs of ice-cream I manage to pack away in front of the tv on a sunday night... :p

    Defo will do..

Thing is though, it might sound silly but i think its down to maybe what im eating and also that im not eating enough... i know it sounds a little strange, but think i need to really assess everything, cause its v embarressing going to the class and not having an reduction. embarressing is the wrong word... just demoralising....but im definately going to stick at it, and im trying to walk so much more. So time will tell.

if you want, just post your daily diet up here and I'll take a look, and give me your bodyweight so it'll help me figure out what you daily calorie needs should be. PM me your weight if you don't want it splashed all over the board :o but tbh, the diet details are often helpful to others to see how they can alter their eating requirements too

I have just started eating healthy too, sticking to low GI foods and i have to say i feel so much better its only been two\three weeks. I have a lot more energy all day round.

Heyes what kinda of exercise are you doing as well as healthy eating?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,057 ✭✭✭amazingemmet

Sorry g'em but i've become skeptical of people who claim to be female on the internet, See user Babypink for more proof of this. Anyway male/female your still super-poster no.1 but watch out t-ha is catching up fast.

OP- Could it be water retention? PMT bloating can add up to an extra 10 llbs.

    Just cut out the salt.

Totally agree with the 'overall trend' comment.

I see it every week with clients who want fast progress and i have to explain to them that it took them a while to get their body the way it is and will quite possibly take some time to get it to where they want to be.

e.g. tested clients this week about 30% body fat, both 40ish, female, no illness, injuries

It will take 4-5 hrs per week of training - more aerobic emphasis than weights, and it will take roughly 1 year to get even close to 20% body fat (which is what i would recommend the average female should aim for).

Dropping a few pounds in 3 months is easy enough, its staying in for the long haul that is the true test of ones commitment. So get working out

To say you added two pounds means nothing. Our weights are fluctuating from hour to hour on scales of pounds depending on what we've eaten, drank, sweated or 'disposed' of. Pay no heed to differences less than 4 pounds.
