Is Thunderbird something you'd recommend?

Im going to set up thunderbird on my machine just so I can use it for college related email. The other option is Eudora..

Can anyone tell me how they get on with Thunderbird and if theres any nifty extensions etc that you'd reckon are essential?

    Thanks!

In general, Thunderbird works as well as Outlook and is more secure. I'd say go for it.

It's a decent email client as for extensions you can find all of them at The Extensions Mirror have a browse to see what interests you.

You should also check out Portable Thunderbird and Portable Firefox. Both can be run from USB mem key. Might be very handy for you. Check out contacts list ext for Thunderbird and Gmail Space ext for Firefox on official mozilla.com website.

i wouldn't recommend it, 3 times while i was using it, it reset itself and wiped all my stored emails, have since gone back to outlook and as before have never had a problem

Use TB myself and never had a problem with it.

Calender extension is good. I use the quote colours and display imap quota extensions.

I've been using Thunderbird for about 2 years now and never once had a problem. I've installed it on many PC's and their users have never had any problems either. Extensions for Thunderbird and Firefox really add to what is already a very stable and secure product. Highly recommended.

    TB is good indeed.
addBlock is a must have extension!

The only annoying bit is if you update TB and suddenly your beloved extension doesn't work with the latest version and no new version of the extension out yet. Happened to me a few times with the calendar.

Here's another vote for TB. IMO it has a great junk mail filter, I never have to worry about junk, apart from the odd one or two. Those I just quickly hit the "Junk" button and it's gone.

I've used TB for a good few years and have only had one bit of trouble with it. Often times I'd open it to find all the windows blank... I had to close and restart to get them back again. More of an anoyance really.

IMO, as with a lot of open source software, the real beauty is in addons, extensions and the like. Then again, ThunderBird on its own is still a great email client. I agree with thehomeofDob - the junk mail filter is fantastic.

It can take a bit of getting used to, but ultimately is very useable and just goddamn great :)

I find thunderbird brilliant. Not one single complaint whatsoever. Also, if it takes away from the power of the eternally eviiiiil MS, it can only help!

As much as I endorse Firefox... TB just doesn't do it for me. I'd go with Pegsus or Eudora. (Still, TB before OE/O)
