Nikon D50 and lens ?

I think I have hald decided to go for an SLR and I am looking at the
D50. It seems to be a fair price and seems better suited to someone
starting with an SLR camera. I had a play around with someone I knows
D50 and even in idiot automatic mode the pictures were a lot better
quality than my point and click.

    My questions are:
    1. Most kits seem to come with a 18-55 lens which if I understand
correctly gives a fair amount of wide angle and a little zoom. I also
see kits which have the 18-55 lens with a 55-200 lens which I guess
    gives plenty of zoom ?

    2. Some lens are marked DC and some are marked DX what is the
    difference ?

    3. Where would be a good place to buy it either online/shop and what
price should I be looking at paying ?

    4. Is there any good resources on learning about the lens things like
    15-50 and Af1.8 confuse me ?

    5. If I want to use it mostly in automatic mode initally will I get
better than point and click mode on a compact camera ?

    6. What size SD card should I get and is there a particular brand in
terms of one being faster than the other ect ?

    Thanks
    Whimsey

    Hi Whimsey,

I found an eBay shop on eBay selling the following "starter pack" for €869 EUR (Incl. €20 EUR P&P):

    - Nikon D50 D-SLR Camera
    - Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm - f/3.5-5.6G ED
    - Sigma Lens 70-300mm - f/4-5,6 DG Macro
    - 1GB Kingston SD Memory Card
    - Tamrac Superlight 5 Camera Bag

Here's the actual offer I found on eBay although it has now expired...

    Hope this helps!

Just Got a D50, been playing aroudn with it and am real happy with it so far.

    1. Correct , the 18-55 is wide angle wit a little zoom. I got the 18-70mm nikon for wide shots and the 55-200 for a bit of zoom. TBH the 55-200 didnt give as much zoom as I'd hoped but it'll do the job for now. Only thing im annoyed about is swapping them around quiet a lot, but the other option is to buy a 18-200 lens - the nikon one is about €700 though and more than I could spend.

    2. The DX is a digital camera specific lens, im not sure about the DC.

    3. I got mine in Newyork - I believe there are reccommended online shops in a sticky at teh top of this forum.

    4. again sticky at the top of forum , I found googling for depth of field or apeture or similar will throw up plenty of stuff for you.

    5. Compared with the Olympus mini mju 4 mp I also have, it takes a better picture - but not amazingly better. The camera will help you be a better photographer if you take the time to learn all the functions!

    6. I got a 1gig twinmos sd card here http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=314273. good price and it works fine. I reckon at least 140 shots in raw format, way more if you go down to high quality Jpg.
