    Hi,

I have a Canon 300D with the kit EFS 18-55 (non-USM) lens and also a Sigma 28-300mm super zoom. I rarely use the zoom over 100mm so I was thinking of replacing both these lenses with something in the range of 20-100mm (or thereabouts).
Can anyone recommend a good lens in this range?
    thx

Tamron 28 -75. It's affordable and produces great photos. Have a look for it on pbase. Don't get put off by it being 3rd party, it has a great reputation and i'd recommend it first hand.

If money isn't an issue though, you can't beat an L lens!

unfortunately money is an issue, so I'd be on a budget of about 300 quid. Would love an L though or even a super wide prime and a 100mm prime... Have nothing against 3rd party lenses as long as they are good performers

Unfortunately you're a bit limited in that price range. The Canon EF-S 17-85 would be ideal for you, and also has image stabilisation, but blows your budget by about €200. Getting wide/cheap lenses just aren't really an option. Tamron seem to have a few reasonably priced zooms in ballpark of your budget, but I'm not really familiar with them, so wouldn't be able to recommend any.

The 18-55 is actually a fairly decent lens when stopped down to f8-f11. I'd also stongly recommend the 50mm f1.8, it's an absolute steal at the price (well, the prices on the web rather than the €150 usually charged in shops). It's not very wide, especially when put on a cropped frame DSLR, but it's an excellent lens.

yeah, I have the 50mm 1.8 lens and I love it, but it's a bit limited as a walk around. Looking at the Canon EF 28-105 F/3.5-4.5 II USM which is getting an 8.5 on FredMiranda reviews and looks to be available for about 280 quid. Will do til I win some money and can afford an L

Sorry to semi hi-jack your thread, but, I have a Canon EOS 300D also and, if you're selling the 28-300mm Sigma s/zoom I'd be interested if the price was right :) Money could go towards funding another lens for ye then..

I would recommend going for a 2nd hand 28-135 IS USM. I got mine on ebay for US$391, or just over €300, and it was in perfect nick. If you were to get this new retail, you'd be looking at €600 or thereabouts.

Totally happy with the lens, just need to continue to improve my own technique.

If you can affoard it, the IS lens are definitely worth considering.

I also have the 50mm 1.8 mentioned above, and it's an absolute cracker. Great for relatively low-light stuff, and where you're intentionally going for a very shallow depth of field. You are, of course, limited to a single focal length.

    Theres a new sigma lense 17-70mm 2.8-4.5macro and it's retailing for €350
I can't wait to see what the glass is like because at 17mm and at 2.8 i'd get great use from it.

I have one - well it's not the II version, but not much changed. It has a pretty good recommendation - mid range lens, feels solid with good AF (accuracy and speed) so I'm very happy with it. The focal length range wouldn't really go wide enough on a 300D/350D which is probably why they're a bit out of fashion, but it's grand on my Canon 50E. If you have the kit lens, I suppose you've got the wide end covered.

They go secondhand on eBay on a regular basis, selling for about £100 - mine was £96 including the hood (+about £8 delivery). Just make sure to avoid the f/4-5.6 version. If you got a good price, you could get the 50mm f/1.8 lens too.

    Dude,
Save your money and buy the EF 24-105 F4 IS. Stunning lens and can be had for about a grand. Well worth it IMHO.

    I wish pal...

I also have the 24-85 and that's a decent lens too.
Some say it is the best non 'L' lens.
Have a look here for lens reviews http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/index.html

Thanks Moz. Have sold my Sigma zoom and am actively looking for a shorter replacement. Will keep this one in mind.
