ok i bought a second hand 4 gig ipod mini of my flat mate,
when i got it she said she had a copy of i-tunes in her mas house or something and that she'd get it to me when she could. then i was told i could simply download i-tunes. so i went to the site and downloaded it and instaled it on my computer and put my existing files in and everything. then i connected my ipod and a pop up told me that

"an ipod has been detected, but the ipod software is not installed. please install the ipod software that came with your ipod or download the ipod software updater from apple.com"

so i went and downloaded the updater and it didnt work it say the ipods hardware and the updater firmware are not compatible"

anyway i taught the problem might be something to do with i-tunes as i cant make head nor tail of it so i went to an alternative site i got from on here called ephpod (i think) and downloaded that,
that seemed to connect to my ipod fine and took all my music on and transfered it. now the problem was that when i went to eject the ipod it wouldnt eject from my computer it cept saying do not disconnect, so after about 10 attempts and checking the faq on the apple site i gave up and just disconnected the lead,
now the image is a correct tick saying its ok to disconnect until i reconnect it and it tells me not to disconnect it. ive tried everything from the restore thing to reseting it etc.

so my problems are why wont my computer recognise the ipod? (its windows xp if thats any help)
is there some old disc no one told me about?
and why wont it turn on ?(its frozen on either screen the dont disconnect and the its sfae to disconnect)

im completely at a loss here
    cheers!

have you tried doing a restore instead of an update?
and when you're ejecting usb devices, you should left click the little icon with the green arrow in the system tray and choose to stop the device (after closing all programs that may be using the device)

You may have the wrong software if you see a folder with an exclamation point. This can happen after configuring the iPod for the first time on a Windows PC without installing the included software first.

Make sure you've installed the iPod Software from the included CD before you connect the iPod to your computer. The latest version of the iPod updater will also work.

When troubleshooting this issue with your iPod, it's sometimes helpful to manually put it into Disk Mode. After manually placing an iPod into Disk Mode, you will have to reset iPod in order to return it to its normal operating state.

    1. Before manually placing the iPod into Disk Mode you should verify that it has a charge, if not you need to either charge iPod before continuing or connect it to power. You can either connect it to a high-powered USB port, or plug the iPod Power Adapter into an electrical outlet and connect iPod to the power adapter.
    2. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Set it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
    3. Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for at least 6 seconds until the Apple logo appears.
    4. When the Apple logo appears, release the Menu and Select buttons and immediately press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears.

    5. Disconnect iPod from the power adapter and connect it to your computer; the screen on the iPod will change and say "Do not disconnect"

If you are having difficulty putting an iPod model with a Click Wheel into Disk Mode, set the iPod on a flat surface. Make sure that the finger pressing the Select button is not touching the Click Wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Play/Pause button toward the outside of the Click Wheel and not near the center.

If you are still unable to put your iPod with a Click Wheel into Disk Mode, use one finger from one hand to press the Select button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Play/Pause button.

I got all this from the apple website, if it doesnt work the iPod may be done for.....
