Widescreen US shows putting text outside the "safe area"

Watching, as I do, 16:9 widescreen programs in 4:3 or 14:9 compromise ratio on my 4:3 tellybox via NTL Analog, I've been noticing that while UK/Ireland programs keep all the text and other important bits of the picture within the 4:3 "safe area" (except for some cheaply produced Irish ads), quite a few US programs (Deadwood, ER, Lost, etc) have text during the opening titles disappearing off the left and right hand sides of the picture.

    Why is this?
Why don't US program makers keep all text within the "safe area"?
Surely there are still a lot of people in the US watching on 4:3 tellyboxes?

    Just curious...

Its RTE's Fault.(Always good to blame that shower of ejits). If you watch lost on
C4 it doesn't happen and it doesnt happen with the dvd either.

If that's so, what is RTE doing wrong then?

I've noticed the problem with Lost (Series 1) on C4, not sure about Series 2 on RTE. Also noticed it with Deadwood on Sky One.

Chorus broadcast certain widescreen stations in 4:3 aspect anyway, so I have a Widescreen TV and most shows on E4 (Smallville etc.) will have text and picture cut off even though I have bloody widescreen!
    Really annoying.
Some channles are ok though, Sky1 has the Stargates in compressed 16:9 format, but once you switch the TV to 16:9, it's grand.

RTE put text/logos outside the 14:9 frame on Winning Streak. Idiots.

And there I was begining to think it was a problem with my tv and not thinking it was the actual tv stations that were causing this
