Email client that's like the GMail's conversation/threading interface?

    I have a gmail acccount. I really like the conversation view. However I don't like trusting a computer I can't pull the plug on. I don't want to have to rely on gmail. I also want to start using encryption and email signing. After playing around with faking email headers, I want something more secure. :) So I'm looking for a new email client.

    What I want:
    * Handles threads in the same way as gmail
    * Stores email in an open manner, I don't want to get locked into an email client.
    * The usual email stuff: POP3/IMAP etc etc.
    * I can get it for free. :)
    * Runs on Mac OSX (since that's what I have)
    * GnuPG/PGP/Encryption/Signing support.

    Prefered, but willing to skimp on:
    * Open source
    * Easy to extend, write plugins etc.

    Does such an email client exist? Is there some way I can make an existing popular email client (eg Thunderbird, Mail.app) do what I want?

    EDIT: Edited title to clarify that it's the conversation/threaded view I really want.

    What exactly do you want it to do?
    Gmail isn't really a client per se.
    If i'm understanding you right, you want an email client suck as Outlook Express Or Thunderbird that looks like Gmail...
    You could try looking for a skin for thunderbird...

    It's not really a skin that I want. I don't care too much about appearance. I want an email client that supports threading and conversations the same way gmail does.

    Well hello to you too Robin. I should know your name, but Larry had to tell me :o .

    I had a look at Thunderbird (and Apple's Mail.app), but I found them both to be email orientated, not thread orientated. For example, when I open the first email in a thread, it only shows that email, I need to go to the next email to see the next email, whereas gmail shows it just under it. Every email app I've seen seems to do it like this. Except for gmail. Why has no one copied them?

    Ung, X11 for Mac OSX is horrible. For one thing, you can't copy and paste between X11 applications and the rest of Mac OSX. :(

    Could well be that Google have patented this method of displaying mails and hence no one can copy it.

    A possibility in places where software patents exist, like the USA. But due to the size of google and popularity of gmail, we would have heard about this long ago.

    I'm half tampted to write my own email client (in Python) do do this. I'd much rather not have to of course. :)
