Been toying with idea of getting a set of wheels for the car, the ones on it are fairly bland. I went into a place called souped in JFK and they said they couldn't get any to fit. I though wheels were wheels, no matter where their from. Buying from the states might be a bit too expensive what with vat and transport, actually buying from anywhere abroad I would imagine would be way to expensive. So where they just being lazy in that shop or are alloy wheels impossible to get for a mustang/yank car over here.

Its all about spacing sizes. I.E where the bolts go. Id imagine it would be hard to find fitting wheels here, but you could always try modifying you hub.

You need a 114.3 5 stud pattern Jeep, mx6, Camry, MR2. but you might need spacers. If you want something modern or like said Brady's.

Wow, just phoned the Mustang garage in swedan ,I think, for magnum 500 wheels their looking for 1300 euro. Those same wheels are $700 in cal mustang.
Maybe importing from the US won't be as expensive as I thought.

All efforts to get a wheel that fits haven't been going too well, still waiting for bradys to get back to me and a local guy is trying to get something that fits, I'm thinking of going with cal mustang who have a set of Magnum 500 with centres and lugs for $700, might as well stay original. I can't find a vat reciept that I got with a previous order so I'm unsure how Mr tax man calulates taxes owed on imports, 21% I know, but I remember that there was other taxes included. For instance, my order was for $200+, but the tax bill was nearly 100 euro. So am I right in thinking that on a $700 item I can expect to pay nearly 50% again in taxes, seems a little odd, sickening even, has anyone got large orders from the US or else where and could give me an idea of what to expect.

21% vat and roughly 4.5 or 5% duty + postage which on weight would be about 1400 euro total. I think your car would look better with modern black chrome euro wheels about 16"

Cal mustang say the shipping would be 35% of the value, which works out at about 245 + 15 handling, thats $960. Now here's the thing, does Mr bas*ard taxman calulate on the total including shipping or just on the value of the item. If it's just the item, which works out euro at 586 euro then the tax should be 123+ 5% = 29 =738 total + the shipping and handling 218 euro, total 956 euro.
I would be happy with that, tyres extra of course.
Unfortunatly, I've only come up with a choice of two wheels over here, both would take a month to 6 weeks to arrive and could look sh*te on the car when they do, the magnum is a nice original wheel and will look sh*t hot with bf goodridge raised white writing on them. All black would be nice too, if I could get them.

Well well, I've just been on to the revenue, aparently the calculation is as follows. Item plus shipping, import duty of 10%, add that to the total and add 21%. So for the wheels the total would be 1070 euro. It's all aimed at keeping biz in Europe aparently, although I got a price from Europe and the yank price with taxes is still cheaper.

I still would consider new wheels (mr2 camry)

Thanks 69, actually the last pic has magnums on it. The problem over here is that suppliers seem to kak themselves when you mention american, in Suped, JFK, who stock a huge range of wheels, their supplier wouldn't even check if they had a wheel to fit. I gave my spare to another wheel man in Cherryorchord, he came up with 2 wheels that may fit,but a long wait.
Anyone know of any other large suppliers of wheels in Dublin.

I used www.wheeltool.com then double checked with the data in Halfords for the ones that fit am temped on a set of platinum 17" with tyres for E1300 but will need E200 spacers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,084 ✭✭✭dubtom

Are the spacers just because your going 17' or does it depend on the actual wheel your fitting.

Wheels have been shipped, took their time the nackers, I've been checking out tyres, I'm not sure of the proper size i should get. 185/60/15,195/65/15,205/60/15. I know the 3 digit numbers are for height eg 195,and they go up god knows how high, 225 ect, the 60 or 65 are width and 15 is the rim size. Safety wise how far can I go, I'd like a tyre that looks good and chunky but i dont want to compromise handling. Any ideas.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 260 ✭✭69 mustang

Id go for slightly wider on the back say 195/65 front and 225/60 back.
Use the link in my lower message for the math.

Wheels were delivered today by fedex. They phoned last night to tell me that they were very sorry but there was duty owed on my package, do I have a vat number, are they for an antiquity, the lowest they could manage on the price was 140 euro. 140 euro, that'll do nicely thank you very much,I was expecting double that. Now to the difficult part, no one in this town can manage to get me the tyres I wanted, goodrich or firestone with raised white lettering. Bradys in arklow didn't even get back to me about the wheels but I may try him for the tyres. I also have the option of buying direct from England at 93 sterling a pop, which isn't so bad, I would expect to pay about 150 each over here anyway.
Any other contacts out there who may happen to stock those tyres.

I dunno anyone over here but Brady is worth another try. he may have them in staock !

By the way your idea of the tyre size is a little askew, the 195 is the width in mm, the 65 is the aspect ratio (the height -65% of 195) and the 15 would be the diameter !

You will need to find the "J" size of your rim, most likely a 7or8J and then get a tyre that bulges out slightly from that to give some rim protection.

    I would suggest a 205/60 x15. What does it currently have ?

Try Longstone tyres in the Uk (use Google to find their web site) A guy ther named Dougal seems to be very clued in on tyres and has been a great help in the past. Managed to find the right tyres for my old Merc with the correct kerbing band as per the original spec. Worth a call, good luck

Sorry for not getting back sooner, it currently has 195/70/14 Merc although your suggestion seems about right, although I'm still having a little trouble getting them. Brady's are currently checking what he has in stock, but tbh I'm getting a pain in my arse with the hole thing at this stage. All I seem to be getting is I'll phone you back, you'd swear I was looking for tyres for the space shuttle. I may just go for plain black at this stage if I get no joy today although I will check out Longstone's John, thank for the link.

I had the BFGoodrich radials shipped for my '68 from Summit in Ohio, to my front door for €240 total! Never was charged VAT for them. $66 each IIRC

Got the wheels on today, they look well, I'll post a pic when their clean(stuck behind a truck on the way from Arklow) I'm happy with them apart from the price, sickened to hear they could be got from the US for a couple of hundred. Anyway, it's turns out that Brendan Brady is president of the aaai, very helpfull guy, even gave me a socket for the wheel nut complete with masking tape to protect the chrome. Good to meet other classic owners.
