today had worst ever day on the internet..
first lost 200 when qq beat my AA on the riv...bad beat so fair enough..

then in space of 2 hours i lost 350 with 2 hands very similair..

1, flop A 3 2.........I RAISED it 20 preflop to play in 2,4 table..i had 22 so raised it up 40 with my set,,player goes all in about 100 more and i call,, he turns over pocket 3s to beat with with higher set

2.almost exact same as hand as 1, but i flop set of 3s in flop of q73....after a raise ,re raise im all in for 150 and find im behind to pocket 7s..

    question......
1.could i have folded my sets in this situations<previously they have earned me my biggest profit so am slow to fold set>
2.would ye have played them any differently

I probably would lay down hand 1 because there was a possible straight. In general if the only hand that could beat my set is a higher set, id lose all my money, depending on the player of course. I suppose that's why we're not pros. I wouldn't worry to much about it.

Its very very very rare that you would fold a set, and in general its good to treat it as just one of those hands that you have to pay off from time to time. (like having KK vs a maniacs AA). I lost 3 pots to a value of about $4k i think a few days ago within the space of 24 hours, all set over set.

That all said most players play so badly that they give you a chance to get away from your hand. Basically if a player raises preflop, then checks the flop, and then wants to give a lot of action later in the hand (baring a flush/st8) it means they flopped a set. Now I think this terrible play, but thinking about it now its only really terrible when im in the hand as other players play as badly as well they probably dont even notice this.

HE RAISES PREFLOP, AND THE FLOP IS A32. WHAT HAND IS MORE LIKELY, AK or 45?

I didn't realise he had raised so much but you get the jist of where I'm coming from. If the ONLY hand that could be ahead of me was i higher set id lose time after time.

Don't raise preflop with smalll pairs.

I've only folded a set once in the last few months on a non straight/flush board. The villain who raised preflop was tight and seldom raised preflop. The flop came up K8x and I had 88. I checked it to him and he checked. The turn was an A and I bet into him. The river was a blank and I bet even bigger, he then goes all in for another $200. He would've bet the flop with AA or AK so the only hand I could see him playing this way was KK. I had to fold.
I just get on with it if I'm beaten by an overset, it's just not something you can start worrying about all the time if you want to make money.

Always raise preflop with small pairs in an unopened pot in late position is probably better advice

    I dont like this advice.

In 6-max games, I open from every position for a raise with small pairs.

In full ring games (on the sites I play), I open fold 22-66 from EP, but limp em in MP and open raise em from LP.

Its much easier to stack somebody when you flop a set, in a raised pot. And if you bring it in for a raise, you stand to win the pot when nobody hits anything.

if someone hits a bigger set than you I find it's just tough luck and you have to pay them off 99% of the time. With regards raising small pp's, all a matter of personal preference, experiment and see what suits you.
