    hi guys,

i have to get a filling on a tooth at the front of my mouth and am a bit worried about its appearance. i didnt think to ask my dentist at the time but are there differant types of filling available that could hide the fact that the filling exists? if he just uses the silver filling i might end up looking like a pirate and i kinda want to avoid that.

Can you have your silver fillings replaces with white ones out of vanity?:o

Ok with dentists they have to and most sane ones anyway will put a white filling on there. And if your paying then you choose but if you are on a medical card then the medcal card entitles you to recieve for the front teeth a white filling and insist on it. If they refuse either go to a different dentist or you can issue a complaint against them. This is what I do for a living dealing with this so good luck!

    Howdy,

I'm actually just in the middle of some dental treatments... to the potential pirate - you'll be fine!!! A dentist would have to be completely insane to put a metal filling ANYWHERE in the front of your mouth.

Like someone mentioned - if you are on the medical card then you are entitled to have white fillings in the front of your mouth. If you are a private patient then all dentists are required to ask you if you would like a white or metal filling... and that goes for anywhere in your mouth.

Wexhun... that's one of the reasons I'm visiting my dentist!!! It looks amazing... I've even had a filling in a wisdom tooth replaced! I'd recommend it! You don't have the icky metallic taste and you really can't tell that there is a filling!

I've no idea as to why someone would actually be able to see my wisdom teeth - I know you are probably thinking that I'm crazy! but honestly - I really do feel better having them replaced! :p

Oh... and just as an fyi - there is only €20 difference between the types of filling... and in my mind since you are paying so much to get work done why not pay a little extra and be 100% confident and happy with the result!

    Hope that helps! :)

White fillings dont last as long as silver fillings (7 as apposed to 12 years) and leak around the edges. If you really want something white then get a porcelain inlay of onlay more expensive but a much better longterm option. White fillings should be always done under rubber dam isolation and take about twice as long to place as amalgam fillings. So if your dentist is only charging you twenty euro more then this is either a great bargain or something is up?
