    Hi fellas,
Over the last few days, I have been having a bit of a problem with Windows. When I go to clear the history in Internet Explorer, The whole thing freezes up. And I have gotten this message once or twice. I then use the Ctrl + Alt + Delete to bring up the windows task manager, after cancelling Internet Explorer there then this shows up, When I go to shutdown the Computer afterwards, It shutdown as far as “windows is shutting down” It then stays that way and I have to keep the power switch pushed for about 5seconds for it turn off. I have run Norton 2005, Ad-Aware SE Personal and Spybot - Search & Destroy. None of them found anything, I am still suspicious of it being a Virus or Spyware!

Anybody have this experience before? It has me stumped anyway!

Any feedback or Ideas are very welcome!

Ohh dear, f'ing up Explorer is never good as it's an integral part of the OS itself. It's a long shot, but perhaps you could try upgrading to the IE7 beta? Or use Opera or Mozilla? :p

Firefox the majority of the time only today my sister had to look up Exam papers and she used IE from being used to it! So is my IE goosed or what seems to be the scenario? Not really bothered about IE, The Shut Down problems are a pain in the proverbial though

You can just download the IE7 beta here.

The message you have up there, re Rundll - Rundll is an essential windows component, not just an IE component - it just loads libraries into memory. However, I'd start by re-installing internet explorer 6 (definitely not the beta of version 7 - fix the problem you have first using the current software and then if you want to try Microsoft's pathetic attempt to copy FireFox that's a separate matter! ;) )

After that I'd be considering general Windows Repairing. Running scandisk on startup might locate some issues needing tidying which could resolve the problem or using the repair option from the recovery console on the Windows Boot CD. However, it would need to be a compatible boot version to the installed version, ie with service packs etc. which may be a problem?

EDIT: JUst another thought occurred to me - when you have IExplorer open, check the task manager and see just how many open instances of "RUNDLL" are in your processes. I was making the assumption the rundll instance causing the problem was linked with Internet Explorer but it could still be some malware type stuff that escaped your checks etc. that is creating an issue.

    BUMP,

This problem is driving me mad, My computer now will not shut down at all whenever I was on the internet during the session or if the PC is switched on more that an hour. It is so annoying, I rang Smell Yesterday and got my usual friendly thrash service from India. (A 5yr old knows more than these Muppet's) The advice they gave me ended up removing my Satellite Broadband service and my Anti-Virus. I have almost reached the end of the rope with it and am considering getting in an expert to wipe the whole thing clean before selling it as it is still worth almost a grand. I have had it with Microsoft and Windows it is just one problem after another. I wonder can MAC be ran on a Intel PC like my dell now especially since they are tied up with Apple. I cannot stand Windows anymore it is completely unreliable and I am just sick of it. I reckon for every minute of enjoyment I get from it I spend 4 just making it work. If I can't get this fixed I plan to flog the PC and buy another crappy Dell for around €400 for to host my Satellite BB as it is incompatible with MAC, then network them together. I cannot stand Dell or MS anymore. What would be the solution to these continuous problems.

The chances of Dell knowing how to fix a problem like that are 0.

It may be easier to backup your data, and do a reformat of the machine, though because you have a Dell, you'll have to use their system restore. Dell do put alot of uneeded crap on the computer, and the drivers they use are usually months to years out of date.

Anyone else find it kinda ironic that a guy called netwhizkid is having problems with IE?

Anyway, in my experience, RunDLL is linked with Control Panel. Have you installed TweakUI, Quicktime or anything that would add an icon to the Control Panel?

do you have hotbar installed by any chance?
Or a network drive that is not mapped..
both of the above can cause rundll32.exe to hang..
Rundll32 is used to launch dll's within the OS.
Another possible cause is outdated nvidia drivers or more seriously some viruses and trojans are named as rundll32.exe..

if not any of the above try the below site for tips

    Bump Again!

This problem went away after removing some stuff from MSCONFIG however it is back again now. I have tried everything, I "repaired" Internet Explorer using this guide and it made no difference. I never use IE except in cases where FF won't work for some reason even then I use the IE tab function. However the thing is causing the PC not to turn off. Like it will shut down but will hang there with "Windows is shutting down" I downloaded XoftSpySE and it found a few problems which I suspect may be causing it. However I must purchase it to fix the problems. I'd do a format in a shot at this stage except I have some borrowed software on here, that I'd lose if I format. The XoftSpySE test results are in the Attachment. Anybody come across either of those threats before? I also downloaded Windows Defender and that is a total waste of time as I can't update the definitions on it not a mind it finding anything.

Any help is greatly appreciated. :)

Google a program called cwshredder to get rid of the CWS entries, adaware and spybot S&D should take care of the rest (I'm sure all 3 have links in the free software sticky)

get spybot, ad-aware and ewido for anti spyware, you don't need to buy anything.

tbh, you may be better off just formatting and starting again, and not browsing to spyware infested sites (and using firefox if you can't help that).

I use IE all the time, mostly out of habit, but never have gotten a piece of spyware installed. I also keep the PC bang up to date, and run virus/spyware scanns on a weekly basis.
