Just switched over, I remember it well.

Remember when the Visitors won everyone over and turned them against those "damned scientists" and told everyone they were talking ****e.

    Ah class.

This was a great show. The way they appeared over the cities was later copied by Independence Day... must get the DVD's.

    (Diana was hot btw ;))

heh, i was actually just checking out the dvds on play! How many series were? anyone know? Just 1 i presume..?

There was the pilot, the mini-series and the Return as far as I remember..

EDIT: The Final Battle it says on Play. Seemed like it was 2 seasons though. At the end of th first, they get driven off to behind the moon and Diana gets demoted if I recall right. Michael Ironside comes into it then too and Willie (later Freddy Kreuger) officially joins the resistance

God all of this is from memory too! :)

Watching it now, its like a porn without the sex. Hammy acting and sexy scenarios.

    If ya get me?:o

The DVD's actually go like this

    1. The Mini-Series
    2. The Final Battle
    3. V The Series

I just got them this week... 1 is class but there's a downward slope even in 2... When Julie gets captured and tortured I nearly wet myself...

    Pul-leese.
The aliens are lizards who disguise themselves as humans with rubber face masks. One alien manages to seduce and impregnate a human woman who doesn't find out he's a lizard til later. That's some disguise LOL :o

Read a few months back that there was talk at one of the major US TV production companies of a remake a lá BSG...but executives objected; one of the grounds being that the arrival scenes (alluded to above) were too much like Independence Day and looked like they were plagiarised :D

Great series, great theme tune...obviously if I watched it now it'd just scream 80's, big hair, sh*tty VT quality image and dodgy special effects...better to remember how it was...

Wertz's post would backup the Independence Day theory.

Class show. It did dip slightly after Kenneth Johnson walked away from the project during Final Battle and 'the series' should probably be ignored completely as it is poo.

As for the comeback show it is currently in negotiations. The major stumbling block is Johnson wants to continue the story 20 years on from where we left it but the network making the show want to just retell the story from the very begining again with new characters.

FYI to the guy who said the effects stood up, apparently every single laser shot on that show cost $1000 dollars each so on the initial show at least they didn't cut corners. :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,909 ✭✭✭✭Wertz

Yep....and more notably, feasted on live furry animals. Oh and humans.
...and they wanted to steal all our water.

The orginal mini-series was great but the series was so bad. The Visitors suddenly lost their funny voices and the effects were a lot cheaper in general. The story was terrible but it was left open for a follow on.

The 1983 "V" (short for Visitors)

Wasn't it short for victory. I remember the scene where the old woman gave out to the kid for spraying crap and she told him to spray V for victory.

I think the production values had already dropped even by the time of the 'Final Battle' series. They were already recycling shots by then.

On the plus side it did herald the intoduction of HamTyler. :)

I can't see them making it today... the show is very pro-terrorism... it just wouldn't fly over in the US as the whole show would just end looking like an allegory for the US occupation of Iraq.

Er no. See long ago before Tom Cruise was born there was a man called HG Wells, who wrote a thing called a book. This book was called "War of the worlds" and in it, the SODDING MARTIANS ARRIVED IN WOKING.

They didn't come in spaceships that hovered over the major cities of the Earth though, nor did they pretend to be our friends.

The only real thing it has in common with War of the Worlds is the aliens in V did a bit of human harvesting on the side.. but it was mostly water they were after.

The whole mini-series was mostly influnced by WWII and the resistence movements.

I think a re-imagining, ala BSG, would be pretty cool - and bring back Ironside too :)

Ahh the memories. Tyler was the best character for me, he was on the other night killing bugs in starship troopers. Donovan just a little too macgyver-ish

I used to love V when I was a kid, but as Wertz has said, I'd rather remember it being great rather than spoil it by watching it again.

Wasn't the first showing (the mini-series) shown for 5 nights straight? The min-series was by far the best.

    Ahh.....mammaries..

You've gotta think of the 'mini series' as actually two seperate series consisting of two and three parts respectively. 'the mini series' (1+2) was showing (iirc?) in america in May 1983 and 'the final battle' (ie 3+4+5) was only shown a year later in America.

Most people in Ireland/England have this misunderstanding was all 'one series' because we first saw it whenever the 1984 Olympics was on and we got both series back to back over 5 nights (I think it was ITV that showed it?)

I see. Yeah it was definitely ITV that showed it. Just thinking though, I was only 9 when it first aired!! I feel sooooooo old....

all coming back alright, i was 5 and i remember had to stay up until midnight when it was showing and i was the only one in my family to stay awake for it

I rememeber watching it on sky one, my mom saw one of the 'green aliens' and forbid me from watching the rest of the series. I was so bitter. How times have changed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

    Yep. It was on ITV.

I remember always being really pissed off when they'd break for the ITN news.

I find it's actually aged fairly well... the special effects still hold up and the plot is fairly intelligent and it hasn't got as big an 80's vibe as you might expect.

One thing that impresses me abou it is that when the aliens first land they don't meet with the US president but the UN president.

The mini-series was great, the final battle wasn't bad, it had some good moments, but the star-child magic ending was a cop-out. The series, was dreadful. Apparently NBC went to the makers of "The Loveboat" to write and produce it. I remember liking it when I was 10/11, but it physically hurt my brain when I saw it again at 21. It was like a cross between Dynasty and Red Dawn. (Both V and Red Dawn have Lane Smith playing duplicitous men called Bates out to profit from the invasions, and a scene where the the rebels defiantly sing their anthem in the face of the invaders.)

There are two possibilities for a new series. Originally Kenneth Johnson went to NBC to pitch a follow up series set 20 years after the invasion. I think it was a follow on from the original mini-series and would disregard The (1984-85) Series and possibly The Final Battle. (I could be wrong about that). Jane Badler (Diana), Marc Singer (Mike), Faye Grant (Julie) and Richard Englund (Willy) were all signed up to it.

NBC wanted to go with a re-imagining, similar to that of BSG. And if that was successful they would consider his follow on idea. Initially Johnson was unhappy with that but started writing and see what he could come up with. He decided that as the original series was a Nazi allegory he wanted to do something which would mirror today's political situation. He was apparently very pleased with the result and took it back to NBC, who said they were interested, but not right now as there is too much sci-fi on tv at the moment.

Johnson is currently exploring other options to get the re-imagining on screen and says he has recieved a lot of interest so it may be made in the next couple of years. He is also pretty pi**ed off with NBC as they were struggling in the early 80's and V was one of the shows that kept them in business.

I for one hope he is successful. I still love the mini-series. It captures the sense of awe and wilfull blindness of the population perfectly. I'd like to see either or both series make it to tv. Far more than I'd like to see more series' of Invasion or Surface or whatever other crap is scaring NBC off making this show again.
