Sky to Enter Irish Broadband Market02 February 2006

Reported by The Irish Independent Today

BROADCASTING giant BSkyB is to launch an assault on the Irish broadband market in a move that is expected to shake up the fast internet access sector further.

Delia Bushell, managing director of Sky Ireland, told the Irish Independent that the company will have finalised its strategy by the end of the year, although it is unclear yet as to whether the services will only be available to Sky subscribers.

"There are a number of options open to us," she said. "We could extend the service of our internet firm Easynet, or develop a local partnership with an existing provider."

The move follows a number of recent competitive moves by existing operators who have reduced entry level prices and increased speeds.

BSkyB, which yesterday beat analysts' expectations in its results for the quarter ended December 2005, has increased the number of its Irish digital subscribers to 393,000 in the period, a rise of 21,000 customers.

Across Britain and Ireland, the company now has over 8m digital satellite subscribers. "We are well positioned in 2006 to continue this growth and to further expand the range and quality of services on offer."

Expanding the range includes the introduction of broadband. "Despite the traditional slow take-up of broadband compared with the rest of Europe, there is potential in the market," she said.

"I think we will see accelerated growth in broadband subscriptions in 2006," she said.

Ireland has performed badly in a number of recent surveys on broadband penetration, although the rate of take-up increased in the quarter before Christmas.

The most recent figures available show that there were about 250,000 Irish broadband subscribers in December, with the majority using Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) services.
