Family opening your letters

Based on what I just read in another thread I was just wondering if anyone else's parents open their letters etc? My father used to regularly open my phone bill, credit card and bank statements. I didn't want to argue with him so I subtly told my mother to drop hints to him to stop it. He did it again with my phone bill before Christmas. It's incredibly annoying. I know he gives me money quite a bit but it's still none of his business. I still have my main important mail directed to home but as soon as I have permanent address my post is coming with me.

Probably not if it's your parents, you're under 21 and you live in their house.

Personally, I'd have no problem with my parents opening my post (if I was still at home), but I'd ask them why they bothered if they did.

Start opening his post and see what he says.

When i got a public drinking fine sent to my house my mother opened it out of worry. She thought it was a court order or something..

That annoyed me but they wouldn't open anything else.

I'd have my doubts about that. Maybe 18 or 16 perhaps. But 21 isn't a very important legal age in Ireland, except for getting married.

You can be classed as a dependent until you're 21, so long as you live in your parents' house, iirc. This denies you access to the dole, means testing, etc etc.

I don't see the significance of 21 and getting married?

You must have your parent's permission to get married if you are under 21.

Even if you live in the house they are not entitled to open your mail once you are not longer a minor (16? 18?).

Have it out with the father. Only way. The mother did this as well and it was only when I gave out that she stopped. Unless your father has the same name as you that is.

    Nope, 18. :)
I am fairly sure that it is as Hobbes says - he can't open your mail if you are over 18 - I was just throwing the possibility out there.

Seriously, start opening his mail. He'll hit the roof.

Well I'm over 21 myself so none of it applies but still frustrating. My father is the extremely nosey type. And the same goes for all his relations. Frustrating when you're a private person. Only at home for a short while but already goin crazy with this sort of thing.

I've allways had this problem, as my grandfather, father and myself have the same name. [originality runs like a raging river in this family...]

I've had to include my middle initial to tell our post apart, but alot of companies drop the middle initial for some strange reason, so i end up opening my grandfathers post, my father opens mine, etc etc.

    Major pain in the arse.

I'm named after my old-lad so it used to always happen. I like him though, so I didn't mind ;)

Eglington babes send me on your address and Pighead will send you a steamy steamy letter full of raunch and dripping with steaminess. I can guarantee you that your papa will no longer open any of your mail when he raeds the contents of the love note(Especially when he gets to the bit about the cucumber)

You're classified as dependent until you're 23 and in full time education

You're also 25 and still living at home, you cant have it both ways. They shouldnt be opening your letters but on the other hand they have been doing so for 25 years. And "dropping hints" doesnt always work. Just tell them "Please do not open my letters, thank you". Or move out and your wont have that problem any more.

I both share a name and a middle initial with my dad. Tough break. Good job I get no mail.
