A modding team who did alot of work for Total Annihilation have built their own RTS engine called Spring.

It runs on primarily Total Annihilation content at the moment (hence the pretty ugly 9 year old unit models) but the rest of the game looks great. A new unit format should be on the way in the coming months that makes the tanks and planes look alot better.

The client is free. About 40megs. And there are a good 100 or so people playing online at any time.

As something of a TA purist I didn't like the game that much intially. They ported over the TA gameplay but the engine operates differently so it messed up the balance. But in the last few months several mods have sprung up and now everybody's playing one called Absolute Annihilation, which is very well balanced indeed. And a riot to play.

There's also a space mod called Final Frontier. And a really excellent Star Wars mod. It's certainly alot more fun than any of the officially release Star Wars RTS. And on a much bigger scale.

I'd recommend anybody to try it. It's lacking a certain degree of polish but has carried across most of the good aspects of Total Annihilations gameplay - i.e. the infinite resources and large scale of the battles. Plus, it's in full 3d, has a better interface and a very solid multiplayer client.

Got this ages ago, but never really played it much, as it crashed pretty often last time I tried it, if its more stable I might get the latest and give it another go.

I was playing it all day yesterday and it didn't crash on me. Can't say I hear much about it on the forums either. Perhaps you were unlucky. My computer isn't too high end and It's run perfectly for me on all the maps I've tried.
