message about F8? Thats what you use to boot into that screen on start-up - 'Press and hold F8' and the safe mode screen comes up. If I were you I'd select safe mode/then shut down as normal and then restart. generally fixes it. Update and run any anti-virus etc and defrag the system...

hold down f8 ,boot up pc.,when u c menu ,choose, safe mode,,or else last known good configuration load , or go to bios settings advanced, set boot cdrom 1st, then put in win xp cdrom, press r to restore the winxp os ,ie repair function.DO google search restore winxp info, if u want more detailed info.Use del or f1,holdown key,to get into bios ,after turning on pc,or other function key,f2,f10 , maybe?Sounds like the windows registry is corrupted, neeeds replacing or repair, reg is user.dat. system.dat on drive c:\ , theres backups on the hd c:\ , see support.microsoft.com ,
do search restore windows xp registry.YOU just have to find the reg backup files ,rename em ,and put them in the right directory.CUD take 10mins to do this.

My advice do search on microsoft .com or google , how to restore registry, print off the pages with the rename user.bak system.bak etc commands on the etc,or write down them all,or search microsoft.support.com
restore registry windows xp, they will explain em clearly, theres no point in me repeating them all here.THEY ARE avaidable from any library or netcentre with net acess.
PUT IN win xp disk, hold down del or f1 key to get acess to bios menu. turn on pc, when bios screen appears, clik advanced settings, or Boot settings, select boot from cdrom 1st in menu, then press esc key,and Save new settings ,confirm, yes,or ok. then reboot pc, holding down function key 8 , which gets u menu in 3minutes, then select safe mode. If that doesnt, load windows, then reboot pc, turn on,again, when menu comes up, select ,load from last known good configuration.
DO search on boards.ie windows registry restore.

if u reinstalled in original windows/ default directory, u shud have most of your data, may have to reinstall some progs, browse the other folders on c:\ or d:\ if u need old emails etc, photos, shortcuts.u may have lost shortcuts from the desktop, but the data is still in the hd folders.

If the songs are on your ipod you should be able to get them off. As is the definition of a portable media player. If you downloaded these from the ipod music serveice I know they are protected with DRM (Digital Rights Management) but there are ways around this. I seen a link to such a program on these boards recently.

Try and connect the Ipod to the pc and play the songs from your media player/ ipod media assortment thingy.

Why wouldnt copypod work? It should do exactly what it says on the tin.

Did u format the hard drive, there are free progs on the net like norton ,trial undelete ,etc that will recover most lost data, unless u wrote more data , to the folders or sectors which contain your mp3/ipod, or music data.or download free trail programs ,or go to dos prompt, type undelete c:\ , or undelete help.did u re partition ,and fdisk drive c:\ ,was your music on drive c:\

I think Media Monkey will let you work with the music on your ipod with any DRM worries. It also gets around the problem of iTunes deleting your collection - no need for iTunes at all. [except for the obvious]

When I was installing it, spybot warned me that it was trying to put in a toolbar - no worries, I denied it.

A long shot but check the following folder

    C:\Documents and Settings

There may be a sub folder with your previous profile there, i.e. the same name as your logon name or administrator.

Otherwise if you know one of the missing file names, it might be worth doing a search for it.

download pc inspector Smart Recovery and pc inspector File Recovery .from pcword.com ,or www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/uk/download.htm look at www.pcinspector.de/smart_media_recovery/uk/demo.html .THEY should recover your files ,unless u have already written over your music ipod drive hd folders.Or do search on pcword.com , steve bass tips, and tweaks topics under Topics.the page is section pcword.com/howto/article/

This works on fat32 or ntfs hard drives. You could go on net download these 2 programs to cdr or a usb drive, about 6meg each file.PLEASE READ THE docs ,before you use them ,dont go near your main windows directory, and backup all your music files FIRST.

I may just be an idiot here, but did nobody tell him/her to do a "chkdsk /r" from the windows install cd?

From previous experience (3 occassions) from what he/she described I found it to be "BOOT_VOLUME corrupted" or something to that extent. Which a "chkdsk /r" fixes. All that's assuming no new hardware or alike was installed, and since it's working now with a reinstall I would be led to suspect that the cause was this very problem which seems to crop up a lot.
