Happy Nintendo Wednesday everyone! Following the company's revelations of DS web browsing shenanigans and TV tuning escapades, it's our duty to bring you some juicy DS software nuggets too. Unfortunately, when we say nuggets, we're not joking - expect a single paragraph news belch to follow.
To kick off, New Super Mario Bros. for DS, Nintendo's first proper 2D Mario platformer since either Super Mario World or Yoshi's Island (depending on your quantitive methodology), is now scheduled for Japanese release this May - somewhat surprisingly, given the veil of secrecy surrounding the title up to this point. The game combines traditional 2D environments with some very impressive looking 3D models and, it goes without saying, we're more than a little excited about the whole thing.

Furthermore, in a surprise third paragraph, the company also announced that Konami's competition-flattening Winning Eleven series (Pro Evolution Soccer in the West) is scheduled to hit the DS soon. Although not much is known about the title at the moment, Nintendo did confirm that the game will feature online play utilising its Wi-fi Connection service. Knickers: officially damp.

    Online Pro Evo; good stuff.
We can count on Konami to do a better job at a soccer game than EA; I don't need to articulate my happiness at a new super mario bros. game, that's a given... :D

Wooo, two more must-haves to put on my list o_O

I haven't played PES on the PSP, but the lack of buttons is something that concerns me.

Its great on PSP but can be a little tough on your fingers. There is only a league mode though so hopefully they'll put the cup mode back in the DS version.

i gave pro evo a very quick bash on the psp, the loading times were **** (free kicks and corners took their time even) and the camera was very zoomed in the on pitch (dunno if you could change it)

i think there was some slowdown too, but cant remember for sure

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 518 ✭✭✭danbhala

sure there will be no load time for the ds version....

You get used to the loading times and don't notice them after a while. There'll well worth sitting through for portable Pro Evo.

Whilst delighted to hear about Pro Evolution on the DS, I'm skeptical in the light of the brown pants of a game that was the PSP version, my bets is looking at the N64 version of ISS at best, which in itself isn't ENTIRELY bad but I can't see the DS hardware being capable of providing the Pro Evo we want it to be..

New Mario & Luigi?, that's nice, I think I'll be the first in the world to say that the recent Partners in Time didn't do a whole lot for me to be honest, it was alright for crying out loud!, every magazine/website you read proclaimed tha damn thing to be the best thing since air...

Partners in Time is my favourite DS game so far (and I have played all the top titles).

And its not a new Mario and Luigi. Its a new Super Mario Brothers! Like the original SMB, SMB3, SMW etc.! ... watch the movie linked above!

Can't see ProEv being that good - wrong platform.

If the new pro evo game plays like ISS 98 I would be very happy!!

Pro Evo DS played like Pro Evo 2 on the PS1 i'd be happy. they should be able to have it at that standard anyways. Don't care much bout it graphically, but if they had the gameplay as good as ever, and the look something like PE2PSX that would be great

If pro evo was match stick men but with the games natural playabilility, how can it be bad :D

Best game in the Pro Evo/ ISS series IMO. Me and my mates spent a full Summer playing tournaments amongst ourselves.

The first new 2D Mario since Super Mario World, I've been awaiting this moment, cause lets face it 3D platformers are crap, they belong in the 2D perspective.

On the plus side too, Worms is headed towards both the DS&PSP and there once again 2D, the way they should be!

didnt the pro evo series start on the ps2?

When the series moved from the PS1 to the PS2 it dropped the ISS part, so nominally you could say it Pro Evo started on the PS2. But Pro Evo first edition came out on the PS1

the game evoled from International Superstar Soccer on the N64
    Wikipedia

Originally a PlayStation spin-off from Konami's International Superstar Soccer, the first game in the series released outside Japan, ISS Pro (based on Winning Eleven) was released in 1997, followed by ISS Pro 98 in 1998, ISS Pro Evolution in 1999 and ISS Pro Evolution 2 in 2000.

oh yeah! i remember iss on the snes! completely forgot!

so is it iss delux (snes) -> iss pro (n64) -> iss 98 (n64) -> Pro Evolution Soccer?

    just found this on wikipedia,

The series started with the NES platform, late in 1991 with Konami Hyper Soccer, Konami's first football game. Although technically not a game in the series, the success of the game was enough for Konami start developing Perfect Eleven for the Japanese SNES, released as International Superstar Soccer for the rest of the world, both in 1994. An improved version, Fighting Eleven (worldwide, International Superstar Soccer Deluxe) was released one year later, and saw a Mega Drive\Genesis version in 1996, the same year the first KCET title, Winning Eleven was developed for the PlayStation (Goal Storm internationally) and Perfect Striker made its debut on the Nintendo 64 (released worldwide in 1997 as ISS 64).
    ISS 2000 (N64)
    ISS 2000 (N64)

In 1997 and 1998 there were several titles released, including the second and third versions of Winning Eleven (which included a fully-licensed release for the 1998 World Cup), but the first major in Europe since ISS Deluxe was International Superstar Soccer 98 for the Nintendo 64. It was one of the best titles for the console, and one of the highest sold non-Nintendo titles.

By the turn of the century, KCET's Winning Eleven titles were improving considerably over KCEO's titles, and in 2000 ISS Pro Evolution was released worldwide. The last title for the Nintendo 64 was ISS 2000, based on Perfect Striker 2, and when ISS Pro Evolution 2 was released in 2001 and followed by the first Pro Evolution Soccer, there wasn't many room for the Jikkyou World Soccer series, although three ISS titles were released, the last (ISS 3, in 2003) for the first time was released for personal computers. There were also three Game Boy Advance versions, one of them based on ISS Deluxe.

Yeah, ISS started life on the SNES back in 1993 or so..

would be great if the rumour turns out to be true that the lite will launch with mario in may... nice killer app!

ISS PRO Evo 1 in the PS1 was different to all the other ISS's that had gone before. That's what I was referring to, the Pro Evolution's on the PS2 are a continuation of the ISS Pro Evolution's on the PS1. IMHO there's no comparison between the two series, [ (ISS) Pro Evolution and ISS ] as they play so differently and different development teams make them. The ISS Pro's are difficult ones cause I still think they played more like ISS than Pro Evo, but thats going on my faded memory

But anyways, hopefully we get a good version with decent WiFi

    Give 'em a chance.
It obviously won't be a match visually for the recent editions but there's no reason it won't play just as well as them.

This was the last N64 ISS game and the DS is a step up from that again.

I couldn't care less as long as it plays as well as the PES usually does.

Thank God. I will never have to play the **** that is FIFA 06 on DS ever again. I mean, it's ugly, which I can live with, but it does play alright. The kick in the stones is that you can barely go five minutes without play being affected by some bug or another.

I'd say those are just mock ups.
As far as I know no images have been released yet, bit early for that.
