    Hi,

About to do a memory upgrade for a compaq presario 2500 laptop. Ive done it before on a dell pc without any problems and my question is:

Is it more complicated than upgrading a pc and also will the system auto pick up the new memory or do i have to install software etc???

Can i **** up my system easily doing this or is it an easy job, locate the other ram and insert it beside it?

Its as easy as doing it in a desktop, Just to watch some companys fill the slots when you buy it, say you order 512MB they usually put 2X 256's in the 2 slots unless you other wise state, so just be carefull of that check out whats there before hand, some (dell) put 1 memory under the keyboard and the second in the bottom of the laptop, just incase you cant find two, you cant mess up your system unless you damage the ram but you should have no problems http://www.crucial.com/uk/ have a nice memory wizzard to find out what type best suits your system, best of luck keep us posted

Damn, i looked at the bottom of the laptop and there was a little compartment marked with a ram symbol and just 2 screws, i taught id have to take the whole thing apart. Then i tried to put in the ram and it wouldnt fit. Its almost identical to the other ram except there is a small indent which should allow it to slot in on both but the new ones indent is about 1mill away from the other one and wont fit in. The gold strips match up identically on both but the indent is slightly out.

The computer is compaq presario 2500 notebook, according to the site which i checked before i bought it, it should be a 200pin sodimm ddr ram which is what i bought, whats going on????

Here is the details of the ram i bought:
    1 x SODIMM DDR2 - 512Mb 533MHz PC4200, 200pin

is this the wrong one and if so whats the chances of returning it for another one or a refund. got it from www.bitsandpcs.ie

Well I dont think its DDR2 that goes into it, I think is just DDR SDRAM Check out the Crucial site and go through the wizzard, Check out http://reviews.cnet.com/512MB_Upgrade_for_a_Compaq_Presario_2500_Series_System/4507-3046_7-31241116.html

Whats the chances of getting a refund off www.bitsandpcs.ie

Whats the usual procedure when buying incorrect ram, is it tough luck or am i entitled to a refund, then dont have any other ram at the moment, whats my best option

Well firstly Im surprized you were able to get anything from that www.bitsandpcs.ie they have nothing in stock, Did they recommend this ram to you firstly? if they did then you should have no problem asking for exchange or refund, if they didnt most companies will take back ram its worth a try, how much did you pay for it?

around 60 euro, they recently moved shop and ugraded the website, thats why the seem to have not too much stock but they usually have a fair amount. I rang them to ask which ram and they said you need to open the case and see if its ddr etc it says ddr but i ordered ddr2 thinking there wasnt a difference.

I sent them an email and ill let you know what they say, i suppose it will be a bit of good pr if they do exchange or refund because the result will get posted here. BTW delivery was uick ordered Friday night and got it Tuesday Morning 11.00 for delivery dont know if thats dear or not by comparison.

    Cheers
