Great choice - its a fantastic country. If you're looking to do it on the cheap there are always old ladies around the ports and bus stops offering accomodation in houses. We stayed with them - its cheap and cheerful. Mind you that was 3-4 years ago.

I recommend you go to Hvar Island too. Its stunning, full of rich Italians. There's a good party bar on the water front, lovely swimming, great food.

I can't speak highly enough of the place - best holiday destination in Europe.

    excellent choice.
dont book any accomadation, just arrive and go down to port and the old ladies will be there offering there "zimmers" (constantly thought we were german!) i was there last august and was payin about 20 a night. friend was there in sept the prior year and was payin 15. these ladies really take bride in there accomadation so its defo the way to stay! but dont forget to haggle. tell her u want a discount if u stay mulitple nights

i would nearly say a week is too long in dubrovnik. some gorgeous national parks, rent a car and go north

Would disagree with walshy123, Dubrovnik is a place that it is easy to fall for and can be quite difficult to leave!! Indeed, I'd almost advise doing the islands first then staying at Dubrovnik for finish.

As with previous post, no need to book, just get a good place on offer from the women at pierside when the ferry docks. It's handy to have a good travel guide with maps of the main towns, get them to point out their accommodation so you'll know how near or far it is from the main areas.

I stayed in Hvar before also, highly recommended. There are a number of quieter islands too, depending on what you're looking for.

I absolutely adore the area though - been in 1998, 2001, 2005 and still want to go back for much much more. While in Dubrovnik, day trip to Mostar to be recommended. If you want more than just the islands when you leave Dubrovnik, it's also worth checking out Montenegro, or Sarajevo.

    Depends what yer looking for.

If its a more sedate trip that yer after then stay in Dubrovnik. Otherwise, I'd stay in Dubrovnik for no more than 3/4 days, then hit the islands.

Korcula, Hvar etc. are all incredibly beautiful and a good laugh. Lots of outdoor stuff to do, snorkelling etc.

The south of Croatia is beautiful. North isn't really anything special.

You did the right thing in taking 2 weeks, as a week is not enough to see Croatia, neither is 2 weekss, but it is a good start.

You will be able to travel around ad hoc, and not have to pre book accommodation anyway, so that's cool.

I highly recommend you hire a car.

    FWIW ... here's my suggestion.

    Week 1
Dubrovnik, Peljesac Peninsula, Ston, Medjegore, Mostar, Cavtat and then take a spin into Montenegro as well.

    Week 2

Ferry then to the islands Hvar, Brac, Korcula....Ferry to Orebic on Peljesac Peninsula.

Trogir, Split, Porec, Plitivice Lakes, Rovinj, Zadar,

    Sorted !

P.S You will be back again next year !
P.P.S A week in Dubrovnik is definitely too long.

also thinking of heading down there this summer .. some great tips for a route with trips to the islands, Montenegro and Dubrovnik but with a new baby in our house, sort of limits our options this year. Where are these quieter islands that you were referring to? Cheers in advance

Lot of good memories there. Stayed in Hvar for a week, which is stunning, and then moved to Makarsk, between Split and Dubrovnik, for a week a couple of years back. The Dalmatian Peninsula is stunning alright. Also went to Mostar in Bosnia which was fascinating.

Going to do a week sailing school holiday this year, and another week after that. Time it for the World Cup fever, should be good.
