    Does anyone know anything about a new software package that Microsoft have brought out as an alternative to "Office"? I saw it in the Metro last week but can't remember the name (Microsoft star?).:confused:

    Metro is better than the Herald but they do a lot of google-reporting. For example they did a half page article on alternatives to Office recently and it was all about Star Office - which you have to pay for (unless it's for educational use). Not a word about OO.o at all. tbh it read like a paid for advert!

    What's my point - I dunno? Don't believe everything you read? Yeah - that'll do :D

    Read something in the Metro, about two weeks ago - forget exactly what is was but it was IT related and at least two years out of date. Again, appeared as though it was taken directly off some site that had not been updated in a long while. Was going to write in and complain but then had an attack of "couldn't be arsed". :rolleyes:

    You probably read about Sun's StarOffice, the commercial sibling of OpenOffice.org. It's a fully supported and more polished version of OpenOffice with a better database application.

    Microsoft have had Microsoft Works* for yonks for home users as an alternative to Office. They also have a history of buying innovative companies and then selling the rebadged product as their own. This has caused and continues to cause incompatibilites in the userinterface and file formats (think of cut/paste from excel to word and back again) across ther range.

    OO is free and support is on forums like this, many problems are solved in frequent updates.

    Star Office has support as part of the price I'm sure, Use OO unless you need features SUN offer that OO doesn't or you like support contracts.

    Microsoft Office tends to be pay for support after the inital period - I don't know because it's provided by a third party, whoever had the narrowest margin / best relationship in that marked. Some problems aren't solved by free updates/patches and there is a little truth to the joke about you having to upgrade to get extra features but then loosing others..

    * trade descriptions act :v:
