Partly out of curiosity partly out of boredom I was just wondering whats everybody's favourite obscure/weird/relatively unknown film. Im talking about films that most people wouldnt of seen or even heard of. Dont go posting films like twelve monkeys or 12 angry men or battle royale. Just because a films old, foreign or has an interesting plot doesnt make it obscure.

Ever see 'Save The Green Planet'...? One of the strangest movies I've ever seen!

I just had a quick check on imdb, which describes it as a horror/comedy/drama/sci-fi.........that'll tell you!
It's a Korean movie about a paranoid man who believes aliens walk among us, and makes a hitlist of suspects. One is an important political figure, who he kidnaps and keeps in his basement, interrogating him. The whole film is pretty much the captive trying to escape, it's a strange, strange film.

I have posted this one elsewhere. La Caza - It is set some years after the Spanish Civil War . The story is about a group of men out hunting and on a very hot day.
It is probably not available with English subtitles. Superb film

Obscure has been wanked byb Hollywood.

Anything foriegn can nearly be obscure. I've seen tons of "wow, wtf" foreign movies.

    But I'll stick to Hollywood.

Anything by David Lynch (obscure for retards)
    Bladerunner Directors Cut
Naked Lunch, VideoDrome (both David Cronenburg)
    ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,810 ✭✭✭lodgepole

Bad Boy Bubby reminded me of another film that Channel 4 screened some years ago as part of one of their "banned" seasons. It was called Fun, and followed the same storyline as Peter Jackson's Heavenly Creatures with a location and period change. I'd kill to have a copy of it on DVD. My VHS doesn't work anymore.

Wouldn't class these as obscure by any stretch of the imagination, tbh...

One of my favourite films is "The River" directed by Jean Renoir.
Beautiful cinematography and soundtrack - evoctative, charming, and moving... a gem of a film.

    Irrevisible,

not sure if it falls directly into the "obscure" category but definately very different in a foreign language and not known by most people I talk to.

For me it would have to be D.O.A. A brilliant noir movie about a man who gets poisoned and will die within 5 days. This gives him 5 days to find his own murderer and why he was murdered. Excellent story and very well done.

Funny Man. Managed to get it on DVD too but had to buy a Region 4 from Australia.

One of the lesser known Japanese horror films. A pretty darn unsettling little flick.

Came accross it being shown on RTE one night a few months ago. Quite a good film I think.

That D.O.A. sounds class. Exactly the sort of film Id go for ill definately chek it out. I remember when I was a kid I taped something and I caught a bit of that Gummo film at the end. Ever since that it would pop into my head now and again. I only caught the start where the kid is on the bridge and the part with the two brothers. Thanks for reminding me off it.

Oldboy, Ichi and shaolin soccer are you serious. Their going for 13 quid in hmv because so many people have bouhgt them!

Yup I will have to say Oldboy , such a good movie.

Southern Comfort. Directed by Walter Hill. Powers Booth and Keith Carradine. Similar to Deliverence except with no Ned Beatty buggery scenes and a deeply brilliant Ry Cooder Cajun soundtrack. Its a lost gem.

My favourite sort-of-obscure film is Seven Samurai. It seems like every film I like enough to call a favourite is too well known to qualify.

That said, I'm familiar with most of the titles that have been mentioned so far, even though I haven't seen very many of them. So I guess what counts as obscure varies from person to person.

Kung Pow (watch with kids, if you can) and Ma Vie En Rose (best performance by a child actor I've seen in a long time)
    :v:

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Brilliant film, very strange in parts

Right, as a fan of asian cinema I agree with all the weird and wonderful films that were already mentioned.

If you're a fan of Evil Dead, or zombie flicks in general, you will love "Versus"
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0275773/

Just look under the IMDB classification of the film.. Action / Comedy / Fantasy / Horror :)

But that's more mainstream I guess...

For something closer to your definition, my vote goes to "The Wounds"

Strange Brew. This film is just nuts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,982 ✭✭✭ObeyGiant

Strange Brew is incredible, but only obscure in these parts. In Canada, naturally, it's like their national movie.

Just for the record guys, there's a reason most of these movies are "obscure"...

Another one I can add to the list: El Dia de la Bestia (Day of the Beast)
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112922/

A priest, a tv host and a death metal fan loose on the streets of Madrid.
One of the best films I've ever seen, and it still makes me wonder :)

Haha... I love when the Death metal guy is singing Jesus Christ Superstar.

I'm not familiar with many obscure films but if Ivan's Childhood is sufficiently obscure than that's my favourite.

Those of you familiar with Russian cinema will undoubtedly know it. It's directed by Andrei Tarkovsky and tells the story of a young Russian boy who wants to fight in the army during the Second World War. It's a very beautiful and powerful film.

"Dr. Strangelove" (obscure now, because few remember it).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 566 ✭✭✭dalk

    Funny Games.

Anyone for filmic violence to question the media fascination with and selling of violence as entertainment? Is it possible to criticise film violence whilst explicitly using it in a film?

I wouldn't call it the best movie I've ever seen but its certainly thought provoking. It can be morally 'preachy'. Its ultra-realistic but then will have a character make an aside to camera. It seems very violent but then you realise, most of the violence happens off screen. The film maker is more concerned with the aftermath of violence rather than the violence itself. Its odd and doesnt have a satisfyin resolution.

Despite having only seen it once 7 or 8 years ago, its certainly memorable. It's unsettling and disturbing.

I don't know if it counts as obscure though?

Another canadian film, Braincandy. Hilarious and absolutely nuts at the same time. Particularly liked Cancer Boy humming the fields of Athenry.

Brilliant film... Relatively obscure. Will be known by fans of a certain type of film and will probably become more well known as Haneke's profile increases.

That film scared the crap outta me. Im so annoyed there's gonna be a reamke. first I've heard. :(

Can't think of any right now.

Some of these choices are not very obscure

David Lynch and David Cronenberg are not 'mainstream' directors as such but their films generate substantial box office returns.

And Doctor Strangelove cannot possibly be considered obscure.

My own picks wold be Last Year at Marienbad http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054632/ and The Parallax View.http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071970/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,841 ✭✭✭Running Bing

Yeah I thought I made the distiction clear in the opening post about whats obscure and whats not. I understand different people will see different films as being obscure but dr.strangelove is one of the most popular, most celebrated movies ever and consistently ranks in the top 10 movies ever made.
