    argh, does my head in!

Even if a race is delayed you can only bet before the scheduled off time.

Slow at the worst of times & you end up missing your bets because it says "service temporarily unavailable" etc etc

between selecting a price & getting to comfirm the bet it no longer offers the price.

rant over but what do you guys use?

I used to use this during the summer, I liked the website for doing accumulaters in football and GAA but I would always use betfair now for horse racing, the only thing I don't like about betfair is that the minimum bet is €4, and as I am not a big better this is annoying for me.
I was on boylesports earlier today and it was really slow, it was taking forever just to calculate the odds for me on a 5 match GAA accumulater, in the end I just gave up. You could give Paddypower a try I suppose

You should open a betfair account. Almost always better value, right up to the off, then you can bet in running if you have the nerves for it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 687 ✭✭✭sector

Agreed on the slowness, it's even like this at night when I was doing evening dogs all last weekend & it's not my internet as everything else flys, i've a 3mb cable.

also agree on the calculating & what rubs salt into it is with the horses the odds change & often go to sp only so you miss the bet if it was near the off.

think i'll get on paddypower, seems a lot more responsive.

haven't sat down to figure out betfair yet, looks complicated when you log in.

    thanks lads

oh, which reminds me, i had 30 quid odd on a dog last weekend, it finished dead heat (after leading, i was sic!), sp was 3/1 but i only got evens, couldn't find anything in their online rules covering DH.

does that sound right to you guys?

Betfair is pretty simple to use to be honest, the thing you probably have to be most careful with is that you don't lay a horse instead of backing it!! Betfair probably warn you against this, I have never tried to lay anything so I am not to sure.
In Betfair you can even bet in the winner of a race after it has started and right up to near the end of the race!!

I lay a bit, but it is definitley something you have to be happy about doing, as you will lose a fortune otherwise.

Sector, It is quite easy to work out the odds on betfair (as said earlier, when starting off, ignore the lay side)

Go to the 'Back side' - (the blue side)

to figure out a horses price, simply take away one!

therefore a hore that is 10 on betfair is 9/1 in normal odds
a horse that is 8 on betfair is 7/1 in normal odds
a horse that is 3 on betfair is 2/1 in normal odds
a horse that is 4.5 on betfair is 3.50/1 in normal odds (or 7/2) :)

the best way to get used to it is by using it though... with small stakes

Have a look at http://www.playbetfair.com/ . Exact sam setup, but you get to play with "fake" money. Explains the whole idea of laying a bet and explains the odds you are offered.

Can you do this if you already have an acc. with them, like use a different address or something like that?

Check out the sticky about how to beat the €4 minimum bet.

(Although it probrally wont make any sense until you have placed a few bets and got used to it)

I use Victor Chandler (vcbet.com). Good fast site, you can bet in euro, use a laser and you can download a mobile version which is really fast. And I'm sure there's a bonus for signing up. There was when i joined.
I use Paddy Power as well, never had a problem with them. vcbet sometimes gives a much better price on an Irish horse running in UK than irish bookies.

what i find annoying about betfair is that a couple of times I've placed bets and only realised after I won that the bet didn't get matched!!!

just got 3.0 on betfair in the running, (in the last 1/4 i'd say!) on It's a Dream, great ride by Mick Fitzgerald i must say.

Excellent, showing two days profits on betfair so far, although after loosing on the horses yesterday I resorted to the dogs & after loosing a few more races (i know i know) I noticed I could actually back 3 dogs & show a profit no matter which one won, so I'm covering 50% of the possible outcome thanks to the better odds on the exchange, which got me back profitable last night.

    enjoying it so far!

I done the same with Mr Nosie, I got him at 3.3 during the in running betting, while he was about 2.2 at the start of the race!!

Well done on that but did you know that some people got 999/1 on it?!

And on the original topic, boylesports.com does indeed suck big time.

to be fair you should know that I started an awful lot of threads in the few months before christmas. I even got banned for some of them being off topic. I feel I've every right to say what I've said as have already put an awful lot of my time and effort (relative to what I can give) into this forum.
