Windows update not working

Ok, the usual story - laptop riddled with spyware and virus crap. Now that I have cleaned them up, Windows update refuses to work. I did see stuff in Spybot regarding Windows update, but it got rid of them (all scans are now clear).

I tried going to the Windows update site via internet explorer and it also fails. System is XP, service pack 2.

    Any ideas?

    start>all programs>administrative tools>services
check that automatic updates service is started.

All services set to auto, except for computer browser, are running. Just checked my own laptop - it's the same deal, browser is auto, but not running.

Edit: Got it working. Bizarre one, this.

Had to follow the directions on the following website: http://help.lockergnome.com/lofiversion/index.php/t32327.html (the post by 1ComputerGuru). Had to re-register the Windows Update DLL's.
