HP Laptop

    I've heard a few complaints about the quality of HP's laptops but never used one myself.
    That model doesn't look like great value.
    Check out the Dell Inspiron 630m - http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/inspn_630m?c=ie&cs=iedhs1&l=en&s=dhs
    Better spec for better money imo.

    <begin rant>

    I'll cut to the chase - I have nothing good to say about HP Pavillion laptops.

    The biggest pain in the behind is the power cable contiually falling out from the back of the machine. If you are working without a battery and you move slightly, the power cable literally falls out, powering off the system, losing your work. From what others have told me on this forum, this problem is endemic with HP Pavillions.

    Secondly, the hard-drive went after 13 months. A cynic would argue they timed this perfectly. HP support were incredibly patronising (as I have posted here before, I was "an esteemed customer").

    Don't get me started on the 5 minute battery life, either!

    </end rant>

    So, my experiences with HP laptops and HP themselves are quite negative. I would advise you to steer well clear of them.

    I am writing this on an IBM R50e Centrino - the build quality is amazing, the battery life hovers around 4 hours and it only cost me 890 Euro from laptopsdirect. Can't recommend it highly enough.

    They do seem to be a bit more common for HP owners though :)

    And I think you'll find, on balance, just a many rants about DELLs (in proportion, of course).

    It's all a function of how many are sold (1000 DELLs = 100 rants, 100 HPs = 10 rants, same proportion), and what the average laptop user is doing with his and what care is provided (which differs substantially these days when new lappies are not £5,000-a-piece anymore, as they still were just over 10 years ago).

    I've had an HP desktop (bought new) for a couple of years now, extremely happy & good value for money at the time and still today after some upgrades for 'heavy' apps (e.g. BF2 ;):D).

    I've had several DELL, Fujitsu and Toshiba laptops (some quite old), each and everyone bought second-hand from eBay, never had any bother with any of those, batteries or otherwise. (simple tip which you'd think would be well known by now : if you're going to run off mains regularly, just take the bother to remove the battery from the laptop).

    To the OP, if it fits your bill and you're happy with the value-for-money, just run with it - otherwise take a hint from other posts and compare specs/prices. But the one thing I've learned (on my 7th or 8th lappie in 3 years), is to never decide as a function of the brand and especially not opinions about the brand :)
