...mother just found out her only sibling is very sick, so she needs to get over to Florida in the next few days.

Sister says that flights for two are gonna cost about 5k because of the urgency. They want me to check it out. I know it's late, but surely it can't be THAT much. Is there any standby system?

No standby, but your best bet is to get out the phone book and ring around. Telephone booking agents can combine flights and destinations which the websites cant. Ring around and see what flights, prices and connections they can offer you

You might want to mention to the airline that it is a family emergency, while also providing some proof to that effect if you can. Worth a shot anyway.

    Thanks folks.

Seems like the 5k was the product of my sister's hysteria. In fact, I can't find a flight that expensive...

Just checked BA to Orlando via Gatwick and its working out at about €650 return for a week departing any day next week.

Seems reasonable for like 48 hours notice.

    €5000 or €2000 or €1500 my árse

Incidently afaik and it seems obvious from their online booking,BA have abolished minimum pre booking times on flights due to competition.
Booking leaving tomorrow can be just as cheap as leaving in a month booking now.
The only thing that makes their flights dearer is if its a flight thats usually busy-so try to choose a flight time that is cheaper when going through the online booking system.
