Dell VS HP?

    I've never bought a HP computer in my life, always been a Dell man to date, and my current gaming system even is an upgraded dell 8400. Obviously enough it's limited when it comes to certain types of upgrade but I always assumed that HP's pcs for the home market were the same and that's part of the reason I never bothered going for an amd based hp model.

    Except - was throwing a 9600xt and 512 ram into my girlfriends pc last night so she could play bf2 and noticed that even though it was original a cheap ass computer - decent processor with an athlon 2800+ but crappy 256mb ram and cheap 9200SE card - it has an Nforce 2 mobo! The psu was also a standard atx one! This is compared to dells cheap intel mobos and non standard psus?

    so my question being, do all HP computers have this build? This would make them easily upgradable and thus a far better choice then dell being amd based! (for gamers anyway)

    Probably. The only 'turnkey' desktop I've ever bought was (and is) an HP (Pavilion t540.uk).

    Bought in late '04 in UK as an end-of-series, managed to buy base-only from PC world for £499, with:

    * K8N8X-LA mobo (nforce 3) - now, that's an 'HP special' which can make BIOS updates a bit of a 'mare, but overall not that much of a difference from a standard K8N series
    * AMD64 3000
    * 512 RAM
    * DVD-RW & second DVD-ROM
    * built-in multiformat card reader
    * Firewire + 6x USB 2.0
    * FDD
    * 9200SE 128MB
    * 110GB HDD, etc.

    Have since upgraded here and there:
    _ card (ATI OEM 9700 Pro, 2nd-hand from eBay)
    _ Zahlmann cooler with RAM chip heatsinks (new, from eBay)
    _ PSU (Boards.ie deal, can't remember brand but gold in colour, 350W - card needed it!)
    _ added 512 RAM (another Boards.ie deal) to make it 1GB (2700, mobo can do 3200)
    with not a bother.

    Yep, the PSU is a standard ATX in mine (got it for sale or swap on Boards atm, btw :)).

    I'd recommend them, but only if you can't build your own rig or you can't be @rsed to, as unless you fall on right (like an end-of-series/stock clearance, like I did), I don't think they're as good value for money as DELL (non-standard parts or not). I'm certainly considering building my own as a next replacement, now that I've given up on console gaming and can redirect €s to PC-only.

    Certainly HP feels much better build quality than Compaqs (I've experienced in support role), at any rate - and Compaq, like DELL, also uses some 'bespoke' parts. Can't speak for HP lappies, though - I sold my soul to Fujitsu and DELL a long time back for these :D

    EDIT - while I'm at it, and since you seem to be the pricer extraordinaire in the "how much is my rig worth" sticky, how much ya reckon for mine (Base Unit only)?
