Vocal Effects

    Hey folks,

Im looking to get some vocal effects going for some gigs we have coming up. I like the distorted sound on the vocal sometimes - what is the best way to achieve this? Anyone any idea? Any suggestions? I saw Glenn from the Frames using a double mic and it worked really well...any idea what he does? is it a special mic?

Also - Im a bit slow when it comes to terms - but would a vocal compressor be of any use?

Your vocals will be compressed by the engineer if you're doing a venue gig. If you're doing a pub thing then, yeah some compression is a good thing.

You could investigate the likes of this.

    Check the forums on eskimofriends.com

Damien Rice uses that distortion effect on his vocals quite a bit and I remember seeing it over there what he uses to do it. I think its a rat distortion or something and a certain mic with something over the top

We have multiple mics set up for different effects at our gigs. It works pretty well. Hopefully your engineer will understand ;)

I must admit this is not something I know much about and I could be talking complete $h1te here but would something like a shure green bullet possibly combined with a rat or big muff do the trick?

Any mic with a distortion/overdrive/fuzz pedal would do it. A compressor wouldn't achieve the same effect.

You just need an XLR-TS Jack cable to plug into the pedal, and a jack patch cable to plug the effect into a DI.
