Problems recognising/writing to DVD+R

Hi all, haven't been on Boards in a while so I feel pretty bad turning up just to ask for help, but I'm having issues with my DVD+RW drive at the moment and was hoping someone here would have an idea what the problem is.

Basically I place a DVD+R disk in the drive, and Windows (XP) comes up with the usual list of options (burn, read etc) but for a CD, not a DVD. Anyway I go into Nero (version 6 Ultra) and attempt to burn some files to the DVD+R. The progress bar fills up slowly for a few minutes, before it stops and a message pops up telling me when the burn process started. Assuming the DVD has been burnt, I look in My Computer to check the DVD's contents and notice that "DVD-RW Drive (D: )" has been replaced with "CD Drive (D: )". It seems to think that either my DVD+RW drive is a CD-RW drive, or that the DVD+R disk is actually a CD. In any case I double-click on D: and discover that my disk is empty, nothing burnt to it at all.

I don't know whether the failure to burn is a result of my computer believing a DVD is a CD, or whether it's something else, but either way something's not right. I'd be really grateful for any help or suggestions on this, as I'm attempting to back up a lot of important files at the moment prior to ripping out half my computer's innards. I've only discovered this problem now as until recently I simply hadn't bothered to use the DVD+RW drive except for a couple of occasions when, curously, I was able to burn to DVD-R (as opposed to DVD+R) disks. So... any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

i would say you are either using cheap media or you have a bad burner. why don't you try to update the drives firmware?

Thanks for the reply. The DVD+Rs I am using are Maxell, admittedly not the best quality available but I can't understand why that would result in them being recognised as CDs rather than DVDs. I think it's an issue with my hardware or software rather than the media. I'm reluctant to update the firmware on the drive though because it can't be rolled back and I don't want to do anything irreversible unless I'm completely sure the issue is with the drive.

seriously doubt it is the maxells either, what drive do you have? i had a nec 1300a and when it wrote to +rw media it didn't work.
have a benq dw1640 and it is great.
