Mel's Hole

Just wondering if any of you have any thoughts on Mel's Hole? It's something of a mystery, I must say. Background story is:

Guy (Mel Waters) finds a hole on his land on Manastash Ridge in Washington. The story in the area says that the people dumped a lot of garbage, refrigerators and dead trees and stuff, into the hole - but it never filled up over the years. Also, a strange 'black light' was observed coming from the hole and animals would go nowhere near it.

Mel called the Coast to Coast AM radio show a couple of times and revealed his wild story. Including the statement that he dropped reels of fishing line down the hole, and went over 60,000 (or was it 80,000?) feet without reaching a bottom. There were stories of the hole having paranormal properties - one of which being that if you approached the hole with a wireless radio, the signal would become distorted and the radio would broadcast 'old' radio broadcasts. There was also a story of a farmer dumping his dead dog down the hole and sighting it days later running through the forest.

Waters also claimed to find strange artifacts near the site, including a german P38 pistol and a number of 1943 FDR dimes (which shouldn't have happened since FDR should have been alive at that time). He said that after he went public with the story, a government agency approached him the next day and offered to lease the land from him for a large sum of money - warning him that they could easily bust him for running a narcotics lab if he mentioned the hole again.

Of course, it is all unsubstantiated, and many think it's a hoax, but people still search for the hole, even though Mel has disappeared after another call or two to coast-to-coast. When the location was checked with Google Earth, or similar satellite mapping program, the location was all blanked out. This could, however, be due to a nearby missile test range.

Interesting story for anyone interested in the paranormal however.

Black light is like UV light (used in Gone in 30 seconds - the bit where they show up the list of cars on the wall?) .... oh and cat urine glows under a black light!

hehe, yeah everyone laughs at the title. Black light is described as just a darker than usual 'blackness' which was supposedly periodically observed in a beam coming from the hole. Leading some to speculate that the hole contained super dense dark matter or some such pseudo-scientific anomoly. :)

I have to admit to leaning towards the side of disbelief on this story, but it has more credibility than the SERPO or Titor conspiracies and is an unsolved mystery nonetheless - even if Mel Waters was a hoaxer. The paranormal story/properties behind the hole are well thought up and interesting also, if untrue.

Maybe it's a volcanic vent, but then, according to the geology of the area that's unlikely. That's assuming the hole exists at all, and even now there are groups searching the area for it.
