Only been in it once. Music wasn't overly bad, but the place stinks :(

Don't mind the place at all, though I do have a quirky love of dingy rock bars.

I'll take it any night over Q-bar or the like though!

    Where is it?

It's one of the only places you can go where you don't get thrown out for listening to rock music, and where you can thrash about to your hearts content without condescending people desperatly trying to look cool looking down their noses at you. Haven't been there in years.

Any time I've been there it's been full of twats and playing boring nu-metal. Suffice to say I think it sucks!

It has :D It was aquarium for awhile, then bacchaus then back to fibbers with new management. Instead of the old main saturday night DJ, who seemed to just plugged a cd player and pretend to do stuff for the night while never EVER bothering to change around the order of the songs there is now a DJ on saturday night that delights in playing Hammer time, Scat Man john and several other choice turds. Ah yes, the first time it was played it was a jolly laugh now it just getting annoying. Fibbers is a rock/metal bar, I thought the bottles of buckfast for sale behind the bar would have given the DJ a clue.

It's a ****ehole anyway, the smell from the bathrooms has gotten even worse scince the closing of the beer garden. :( They do have live bands fridays/saturdays which is a plus.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,480 ✭✭✭projectmayhem

on the topic of playing scat-man joe... do the management not realise that while there are a bunch of wasted idiots dancing on the floor, the majority of "patrons" are standing around putting their faces in their collective hands?

I've heard something akin to the chart hits of 1990 being played in there before. Fresh Price of Bel Air, indeed :(

I heard Mary Black in there one evening...although there was no DJ, so we can't blame anyone...

Yeah, Fibbers is a dive, there's no denying that, but there are a number of advantages to the place.

1 - There's a "dance floor", the only metal dance floor in Dublin, to the best of my knowledge.

2 - The vast majority of the time, the DJ sticks to Rock, Metal and Grunge.

3 - There are places to go within Fibbers. Upstairs, downstairs, the stage, the bar, the toilets, the dance floor, around the corner, the pool tables. You can "disappear" for a while and nobody wonders where you are...

4 - The layout is great. It's circular so no matter which way you walk, you'll always end up back where you started eventually. There's two ways to get to everywhere, this is useful. You're not all standing around, looking at each other, like in Brux.

But it does smell, the toilets are horrible and it's not very well located.

Its alright actually, nice atmosphere, bouncers are getting strict on ID which is nice. The smell is just horrid though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,088 ✭✭✭fjon

I used to go there a lot around 94-96. The fact that it had a beer garden was great - you could bring your own drink (and most people did). There used to be a fountain out there too, which every weekend someone would invariably fill with Fairy liquid.
There were also £2 snake-bites, lots of vomit, headbanging, smelly toilets and fights with bouncers. But those days were a lot of fun too :v:

That fountain provided hours of fun... Even thinking about a snake bite made me wretch. Jesus, those were the days alright.

until me, my mates and my girlfriend get asked for ID. we're clearly not underage, and if they don't recognise us at this stage then these bouncers really do have a memory like a goldfish

funny moment when we walked in, got asked for ID (on a wednesday). so we turned to each other and in unison said "bruxelles?" and turned on our heels. :D

I live just up around the corner, and popped in one Sunday for a pre-dinner pint. It was quiet at that time, and quite pleasant.. that is untill some scumbag at the bar and some english bloke started fighting..

Entertaining, if a bit smelly.. Oh and the Guinness was puke.

    K.

    Some facts about fibbers:

    It stinks

The bouncers for the most part are fine, but can come down on you like a ton of bricks at a moments notice if you act the ****

Some of the regulars, because they're regulars think they own the place. they in fact do not. dont listen to them.

The DJ's for the most part try to introduce new music to the punters, however some punters (mostly ill educated morons) fold their arms and grunt if they deviate from the established "classics" playing top 90's dance tunes inbetween metal tunes is their way of thumbing their noses at closeminded idiots, and a right good laugh too esp when you see a leather clad longhair in a rage at having to listen to scatman john.

give the dj's a break, i know a few of them and some of the gems they are asked include:

can you play "i wanna **** you like an animal/**** you i wont do what you tell me/ when angels deserve to die?"

    punter: "any old school metal?"
DJ: "what like metallica megadeth or slayer?"
    punter: "no, slipknot"

asking for slayer, while a slayer song is playing.

a sweaty shirtless neanderathal waving his megadeth baseball cap at the dj and bellowing "MEGAGETTTTTTTTTHHH" to him at the top of his lungs (i actually witnessed this one)

fibbers is good fun if you dont take the place or yourself to seriously. The best nights to go are thursday and friday for the dj's downstairs and saturdays for the gigs upstairs....its one of the few non pay to play venues, and bands can make a few quid if they're smart.

Place to go if you just want to get drunk and jump about & act the idiot for the odd very night.... (smelly stress relief :) )

Ah Fibbers... or Fibber Magees to give it its old, full title. In the interim it's been Baccus, and a whole dose of other names...

If you want to know what Fibbers is like, look at it this way.

When I was in University, I used to go to Fibbers a lot. Every Thursday night I'd go in, play pool, drink the best part of a bottle of Jack Daniels in slow shots, and walk the 75 mins back to my college digs in DCU at about 2am.

Fridays and Saturdays I'd go if I had money, drink Jack Daniels and talk to the strange people. I loved it.

    The disclaimer?

    ...that was THIRTEEN YEARS AGO.

    the name says it all....
the ppl there sit about and "fib" :p to each other for 3 hours about how great they are and how they are REALLY intellegent its just everyone else & society & george bush that hold them back.
then on the sunday they dress up as elves & medieval warriors and they like and hit each other with 100 euro rubber swords.
not kidding.... its called LARP (Live Action Role Play). nothing wrong with having a hobby, its just that there is a line that shouldnt be crossed. Fibbers is light years away from that line.

Is a guy whose sig invites people to beat his "clear time" on a videogame in a position to slag off what other people do to get their kicks? ;)

    No offence Jazzy! :D

I've never heard of this LARP thing, but the combination of alcohol and fake swords sounds quite ingenious to me. :)

Sounds ingenious but you can't actually hit people you just wave your sword at them, think dungeons and dragons brought just too far

Ì don't get the hostility towards the place tbh.

Sure, it's a dive. But it's a friendly dive full of wonderfully weird people, the music is generally good and the pints aren't €6 a pop.

Give me a dive with character over the polished blandness of most Dublin pubs any day of the week.
