Just wondering if anyone here has been to see The Frames over the last few days? I was there last night and wasn't sure what to make of it...

I thought the new songs sounded great and they played a good gig, very tight, and the atmosphere was brilliant. But I can't help thinking there's something a bit pretentious about a band charging €30 for tickets, then playing practically an entire setlist of new material, just to test it out, and forget what the audience actually want. The point of going to see a band is to hear the songs you love live. I have no problem with bands playing some new stuff, and its nice to hear it, but in moderation. Glen Hansard even said 'I know you might find this boring but its important to us.' Well what about whats important to your fans?

They refused to play any of the old favourites, despite many pleas from the crowd, because 'we don't want to make a parody of ourselves, we're not a hands in the air rock band.' As far as I'm concerned, playing the songs that got you where you are is hardly making a parody of yourself...

Just wondering what other peoples' reactions are? I have to say I left feeling disappointed, because the band thought it was more important to make some stupid point than to please their fans

Was there on Monday, thought it was fantastic. Glen's interaction with the crowd was fantastic and the band just seemed genuinely happy to be there. Some of the new songs sounds fantastic, especially "Too Many Sad Words Make a Sad, Sad Song", can't wait to hear that on record. At the end they covered Neil Young's "On the Weekend" which was great, and it seemed to be a genuinely spur-of-the-moment kind of thing.

I went into the gig expecting it to be a 'new songs' night.
...the lads want to air a few of the new tunes in a live situation before going into the studio
Just because some fans go in wanting a 'Setlist' type gig doesn't mean they're entitled to it. They did the same thing around the time Burn The Maps was coming out, playing nearly everything off the new album with very few old favourites. Given that they actually released a live album with most of the popular songs on it, if you really want to hear them you can listen to that.

Also, anybody shouting out requests repeatedly after it was perfectly clear they weren't going to be played deserves to be kicked out of the gig

Agreed. That pissed me off. Did these people not realise that it was just pissing the band off, and that the more they shouted, the less likely it was they'd play the songs. I loved the gig. Have been waiting years for that kind of gig. Best bit of the night was when Glen said they wouldn't be playing Revelate or Star Star. It's about time they did that. And they played The ****in' Dancer for cryin' out loud! They play in Dublin on average about 3 or 4 times a year. One gig like this is hardly too much to ask of fans. But I would guess that the majority of people who wouldn't shut up weren't really fans.

I totally agree. It was made clear in the newsletter that this was a gig for new songs. I've seen them probaby a dozen or more times now and thought it was great to finally make it to a gig where they played the classics they never usually do. I loved the new stuff and actually hoped they were going to play more, thats what i was there for! It was a real fans' gig for people pre-setlist and not people who jumped on the band wagon afterwards. I reckon they were completely fair in playing the new stuff seeing as thats what they said they were planning on doing before the tickets even went on sale. I saw on the frames website forum so many people giving out and saying it was the worst frames gig they were ever at. I don't think they could be further from the truth.
