Gym membership - What do you pay?

I just got quoted €1550 annual membership for a family of 4 for my local gym and when I mean local, I'm talking 5 min walk from my house.

Big pool, sauna, jacuzzi, fully equipped gym, plenty spinning and aerobics classes for the missus.

My 2 kids are only 5 & 2 so I'd only be taking them 2-3 times a week swimming for them to use it. Missus would do 2-3 aerobics classes a week and to be honest I might get one gym session a week if I had the spare time.

Just wondering what others out there pay for theirs?

I've rung around a few other gyms in my town and they all come in around the same money, maybe €100 cheaper is the best I can get but its a drive to the other side of town and for €100, its not worth the hassle.

My parents bought me a gold membership (more specifically, the family) to the Kingfisher in Galway when I was about 10.

Doesn't cost me a penny, and membership for another 10 years yet to go....

wow, I'm truly astounded at the prices gyms charge. I had no idea. My university gym is €50 a year for students, €150 for graduates. Ok, so its not exactly the best gym in the world (pretty much a big room with ~30 cardio machines but a fairly decent free weights set-up) but it does us fine.

Just to give you an idea of outside dublin prices.
Health Club in Minella Clonmel - (Swimming, Jacuzzi , Steam room, OutdoorTennis, Fitness Centre fairly new & modern) see website

Single €670 annual fee + €180 joining fee
Couple €1190 annual fee + €310 joining fee
Golden Years €560 annual fee + €140 joining fee
    Youth (16-18) €275 annual fee
    Minor (10-16) €195 annual fee
    Junior (2-10) €170 annual fee

The family rate is based on a couple + the childrens rates aboev, so a family of 2 adults and two kids under 16 would cost up to €1,890! And that is in South Tipperary!!

    Ha! 160 - eat it! :D
I think with any gym it's best to have a free look around, give them your details and then just don't do anything and let them keep contacting you with better and better deals.

Are you a student in ucd? I'm using a school child thing, I'm in 6th year, and joined around the 20th of december.. I'm hoping that when I renew they'll just renew the 190 instead of upping to the normal price.

Yeh, the fact that they have no pool kinda sucks, but for the price you can't complain. Thinkinh of la fitness in Rathgar for next year, ~€350pa and it's got a pool.. We''ve got tanning booths tho.. :D Not that I use them..

You have to be a UCD student to get the E160 deal at the start of the college year. Also (a little known fact), if you are a member of any of the sports clubs in UCD, you can join for E160 at any time during the year. Crunch told us (the UCD amateur wrestling club) that if we give a list of our club members to them that they would sort us all out with E160 membership.

Is SV fitness different to Sanovitae in the Clarion? I thought Sanovitae had a pool.

I think i pay aroun 350ish for public membership and then had to pay a joining fee aswell even though i was a member before they put in the new gym. I still have to say i prefered the old gym there although it had f all facilities the atmosphere was a lot better

OT - How heavy to the db's go to mate in felda.

1500 is about right Lex and the convenience is the key thing, if as a family you get 7-8 sessions a week out of it then it's 2 euro a visit, not bad really but a lot in one go.

You don't necessarily have to be a UCD student. I was renewing my membership in Feb & got a text msg from Crunch saying if I rejoined with someone else, we'd both get €160 each.Which I did.

    Woohooo!

€70 a month for Westwood Clontarf.
Expensive but I'm there at least 5 days a week so I get my money's worth.

Also entitles me to use the branches in Foxrock and Sandymount but I've never been out there.

Must learn to swim some day soon. No point paying for a pool if I can't use it

it is different. SV is the one without the pool. Sanovitae has one.

305 euro for 6 months, i hope so? i've joined in since jun 2005, paying 55 euro initially for full 7-days until they start to operate 5-days week only in feb 2006. now paying 50 a month, that'll work out 600 euro a year.

Cruch in Temple Bar charge me €64 a month plus there was an initial joining fee of €100 so not too bad.

That covers pool, sauna, gym, cv and all classes (except spinning and pilates), it's an excellent gym.

T'was 170 for this year but next year it will be free for the UCC gym. Pretty decent gym to be honest too.

About €500 for Liffey Valley fitness, pay a real premium for the pool which I don't use, if only there was a option for paying for the pool or not! Other than that it's great.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 657 ✭✭✭Benster

I was recently quoted €715 for Jackie Skellies in Ashbourne  , as well as a "special offer" joining fee of €29 (down from €295!)

I told them where to go, I can't see how they can justify asking that kind of a price, and I'm buying a bike instead. Complete rip-off for what they offer if you ask me.

I pay 660 a year for Leeside Leisure at the Metropole Hotel in Cork - no joining fee, but thats the discounted rate for my company. My boss joined the Clarion for 600 - again with a small company discount of about 50 euros I think. AFAIK the full rate for Leeside is about 695 plus joining fee - outrageous for a nice pool but fairly slightly aging gym which is according to the papers going to be knocked down eventually anyway. (Funny how they didn't tell me that before I paid the full years membership . . .) Its a nice pool and its rarely very busy.

I did look around Cork and to be honest there was almost nothing with a pool for less than 600 euros - Leisureworld does a cheaper rate if you don't want a pool. Basically pool membership adds about 300+ per annum to the joining cost. Many of the new and large hotels were looking for as much as 795 euros per year plus joining fees - needless to say those ones were entirely empty when I went for a look around. Either they are squeezing them for a huge profit or their insurance bills are outrageous.

If you're in Dublin one of the best places is ALSAA which is about 250 per year and you pay a very small fee to use the pool. It has probably one of the best ranges of sports available in the country and a bowling alley.

I did consider the bike option but to be honest I don't have the space for one so went with Leeside.

The only complaint about it at the moment is the place is full of russkies, Ben is only short of changing all the signage in the place to russian :-(

At least some of them will be strong. I am sure they are not all russian, don't confuse a pole for a ukranian etc. Do they intimidate you or other members?

Looking to join gym nearby (Newbridge Sports Centre). I had a look in the other day and it has pretty much all you need machine wise but no pool, sauna or anything fancy.
There's always someone standing by to help with using any of the weights or to make you out a programme.

Does 60 a month sound about right for that?

€550 Totalfitness, not bad but the place (Malahide at least) is in dire need of a revamp.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 183 ✭✭giggles

I pay €65 a month for Jackie Skelly in Swords.

I got the option of paying for the year in full @ €650 or paying monthly by direct debit. It works out more paying monthly, but I didn't have €650 to pay up front.

Joining fee was €29 on special offer.
