Following the success of the Irish team at the 2005 IMAF & PWKA World Cup in Milan, I would like to take the oppotunity to announce the formation of the Irish Shuai Jiao Union.

The ISJU, an affilliate of the European Shuai Jiao Union (www.esju.org), has been set-up to promote the practice of Shuai Jiao in Ireland, and to provide a focal point for those practicing, or interested in, this art. The activities of the ISJU will be posted on our web site at www.taichiireland.com.

Shuai Jiao is a term used to describe fast chinese wrestling, which is an integral part of many chinese martial arts, and a martial art in its own right. See http://users.skynet.be/sb018200/ShuaiJiaoOpenMat.WMV
for a good example of what competition shuai jiao looks like.

    Shane,

    Welcome to boards.ie SD/MA forum.

Video looks interesting enough. What are the differences in rules between that and Judo or Olympic Wrestling? How do competitors win matches? Are there competitions like that held frequently in Ireland?

    Thanks,
    Colm

    Hi Colum,

SJ is basically stand-up wrestling allowing use of throws, locks, sweeps, etc... The goal in competitions is to get your opponent down on the ground or out of the area, without losing your own footing. You can throw or grapple using anatomical handles (arms, legs, etc...) or via a short sleeved jacket. Competitions typically forbid techniques that would lead to serious injury, such as attacks to the head and neck, and finger locks.

I haven't any experience in Judo or Olympic wrestling, other than watching them on the box, so I can't comment on how they compare.

I am not aware of any regular Irish SJ competitions, most of the competing we do is in the UK and further afield.

    Best regards,

    Shane

I saw a few videos of Shuai Jiao before. I was very impressed by it. From what I saw, it was very similar to judo. Shuai Jiao came across as very functional and practical. Wish you guys the best of luck with it.

Here is a cool video of it.

Here's some footage from the Dublin class. The Dublin classes were a combined Tai Chi Chuan / Shuai Jiao session with a mix of jacket (Shuai Jiao) and no jacket (Tui Shou) wrestling. We set the club up primarily to keep what was a very successful competition team together with the idea of growing it. We couldn't get enough people training to cover our hall costs, and decided to call it a day. Probably down to lack of interest in advertising on our parts tbh.

If you're looking to try Shuai Jiao in Dublin, try contacting Niall Keane here. Niall's focus is more san shou than shuai jiao, but I'm sure he'd be up for a bit of SJ training if anyone asked.

Best of luck to the lads in Cork for keeping it going, hope it works well for you.

    Hi all,

Thanks for the info. We are trying to grow the Cork team at the moment and I am also planning to start somthing at UL soon. We plan to compete over at the UK nationals in September and then at the European championships in Nov in Switzerland. If anyone wants to join our team and compete for Ireland let me know and we can work somthing out. I would also like to grow shuai jiao in Ireland to the point that maybe one day we have a National event ourselves.

    Thanks,
    Rob

Raventiger - If you want some pre-competition competition experience, why don't you guys enter a judo tournament. I know the rules might be slightly different, but it will definately help you in a competition environment - so when you are going off to bigger competitions, all the new guys will be used to that environement.

    Just food for thought.

I was considering having a friendly with the local Judo club in Ballincollig since we actually train in the same sports hall. They were kind enough to let us use all the mats on a Wed night. I want to get everyone conditioned for the shuai jiao tournament first and the rules. The rules are a lot different in Judo, especially the ground work that we do not do in tournaments. I have been to quite a few national and International shuai jiao events when I lived in America and will try to setup a live environment, so to speak, and get the team prepared. The UK Nationals in September is a great introduction to these kinds of events. There are not too many contestants. The EU Nationals will be a different story so we'll see how they get on in September and assess what we need to do to prepare for the main even. ;-) I think down the road, having events against Judo schools, or attending Judo events would be a good idea.

There are also some students that just want to learn the self-defense side and not compete. That is fine and I respect that. Shuai Jiao has a lot of forms and applications that are designed for the street and not tournaments. It is good for them to learn both.

    Thanks for the ideas.
    Rob

hey, i was just watching the training clip from the dublin club, do you always spar/randori/whatever its called in your style without mats, or was that a one off.

    just curious

Usually we wrestle without mats, not to be hard or as a form of conditioning, simply because they were not available / affordable. In this case, the onus is on the attacker / thrower to take the sting out of the throw and/or support the person being thrown. As part of our conditioning we'd do a lot of rolls, typically 3 rounds of 80 rolls at the start of the class, and our falls tend to be based on rolling rather than slapping the ground. Also, we all came from a Practical Tai Chi Chuan background where a large number of the take downs are forced trips rather than full body throws, as can be seen in the clip.

It's really about getting the best training session possible with limited resources, while still avoiding unnecessary injury. From a practical standpoint the way i've always landed on concrete or wood has been to make myself as round as possible, keep my head tucked in, and try to roll to disperse the impact. I don't think Judo style breakfalls would work in this environment.

Not sure if there are any at present. We stopped a number of months back due to lack of people. Do you think there are other Judo heads, sorry Judoka, that would be interested? We do the same stand-up style wrestling with and without the jackets.

I'd definitely be interested in giving it a go, not just to see how it differs from judo.

Only a few days since i saw this, didn't have time to post and now its on page 4?
For anyone in dublin, I run the PTTCI club in drumcondra, focusing on sanshou. I'm sure for anyone serious into mma I don't need to mention its benefits. For those not familiar look up Cung Le and his fight against Frank Shamrock last March.
I do when requested and on occasion practice shaui jaoi with jackets, but mostly practice chinese wrestling without jackets / gis -i.e. tui shou. We focus on fast throws as under san shou / sanda rules 3 seconds are allowed to execute a throw. I take it this method of immediate recognition and exploitation of leverage could be benificial to anyone. Anyone interested can pop down, sundays I have recently begun teaching the orthodox system, i.e each formal application, as this teaches a different method of applying force. Normally classes are more competition focused so this is a good class to discover the subtilities of what we do.
Wednesday is focused on sanda ametuer and pro competition, a lot of conditioning & techniques with gloves / gear 1hr, and a half hour of wrestling followed by 1/2 hour of sparring. all welcome, friendly, helpful envirnoment.
    Regards,
    Niall

Pity. I suppose it would just be another way to injure myself anyway.
