I don't want to thread hijack but had a question on this post from JoeJoem

Basically, I'm just back in the gym. I want to lose weight & get strong muscle (not nessecarily size).

Should I be doing Cardio, weights or both??

Yeah, you need to do both. TO be honest, everyone should be doing both, regardless of there goals.

But anyway, yes, do cardio every other day, and get those weight sessions in maybe three times a week!

Have you done weights before, an if so to what level? Also, what is your current diet like dude?

I've done weights at a good level (what i'd call a good level anyway)before because I used to play national league basketball so I had to be strong. I hurt my collarbone about a year ago and then chipped a bone in one of my fingers so I was out for about 6 months so I got out of routine in respect of going to the gym. Even when I did go back the collar bone would hurt from time to time.

Just getting the diet back now, eating shredded wheat for breakfast, brown bread sandwich packed with chicken for lunch and then a good dinner with chicken/turkey along with pasta/rice.

I've also found myself tired over the past few days but have been told that it's due to my body detoxing, don't know how true it is though.

I was taking whey Musashi Whey Protein before, should I start again to up my protein intake.

    ATM, I'm 6'5" and about 240-250lbs.

Thats not a bad size to be honest, if you can turn most of that to lean muscle it 220lb would be a really good size.

Yeah you have to view your work out as two different things. One part is for burning fat and one part is for building muscle. The benifit you have of carrying extra weight is that your body can use the fat as energy to create muscle, but to loose the fat and to push your body to burn the fat you will need to do cardio. You will notice an improvment on your lifts and your overall energy too.

You dont nececarally need that much, 20 minutes at a good pace and a steady incline will do it for you. Try speed 12 at an incline of 2.

Ok, now I've been told that the morning is the best time for Cardio, true or false? And eat before or after if I do cardio in the morning?

Should I do Cardio before my lifts or just do cardio one day and lifting another?

The gym is about 100mtrs away so I reckon I could get there 4-6 times a week.

Two schools of thought here. Im of the opinion that unless you are extreemly motivated you are better to plan cardio for when you think you will actually do it.

The idea behind cardio in the morning is that your body is catabolic after 8 hours or so of sleep. It has consumed the contents of your stomach and is now working off the fat reserves in your body. When you get up in the morning and get going your demanding more from your body and using the reserves in your body.

I find it better to do 20 mins cardio before work out, and 10 mins to finish. The pre work out also helps prevent injury when lifting because you have blood flowing freely, and the after work out is a nice warm down and your body is depleted of energy so you are targeting your reserves.

Both on the one day, and throw in a run on your off day if your feeling energetic

Keep the gym from 3 - 4 times a week. Dont over do it or in 3 months you will be sick of the place and making excuses not to go.

pretty much, have a protein shake before hadn to avoid stomach cramps, make it with water.

Thats the theory behind it anyway. I know some people who disagree with it, Ive never had to do it myself so i dont know.

If you're doing cardio in the morning, pay extra attention to warming up properly as your muscles will be stiff and cold after a night's sleep.
